It was obvious Becky was behind it.
I quickly packed up and took Eddie to check out of the hospital.
Tomorrow was Monday, and I had to get him to kindergarten.
When we reached the school gates, I greeted a few of the other moms I had always gotten along with.
But they all turned away, their eyes filled with disdain and wariness.
Eddie skipped happily toward a little girl, the one he played with the most in class.
The moment she saw him, she screamed and pulled her hand away, glaring at Eddie.
“Go away! My mom said your mom is a slut, and you’re just a bastard with no dad! I don’t want to play with you!”
Eddie stood frozen, his face turning red with frustration.
“You’re lying! I have a dad! My dad’s name is Samuel Shaw!”
A chorus of laughter erupted from the people around us.
A plump woman, dressed in flashy gold and silver, strutted up to the homeroom teacher.
“Teacher, my child isn’t going to be in the same class as that filthy little thing, Eddie Lee!

“I suggest you expel him right away. And all you moms should be careful, too. Don’t let any of the dads come pick up their kids.
“Who knows when Loretta Lee, that slut, might try to seduce our husbands!”
The teacher tried to calm her down, but the woman wouldn’t relent.
In the end, unable to handle the situation, the teacher suggested I take Eddie home for the day.
Seeing that it wasn’t the right environment for him to stay at school, I decided to take him to the hotel instead.
On the way there, Eddie clung to me, trying to comfort me in return.
“Mom, I want to grow up quickly. I’ll never let anyone hurt you again.”
I smiled and kissed him on the forehead.
“I’ll make sure you grow up safe and happy, my son.”
