The wind wailed around us, signalling the impending arrival of a snowstorm. Caleb and I immediately began our trek back to the
research station. I shot a glance at Luke and his group and said, “If you don’t want to die out here, follow us.”
Pleasant surprise laced his tone when Luke asked, “Summer, you’re worried about me, aren’t you? I’m still in your heart, so you
don’t want to see me in danger.”
I scoffed at him. “Glacia is a dangerous place. I don’t want your group to sacrifice their lives for you because of your foolish
actions. Don’t get ahead of yourself.”
When we made it back to the research station, Luke approached me once again. “I admit that I was the one who was in the wrong
in the past. I followed you across thousands of miles to show you how sincere I am. Summer, could you put the past behind us and
give me another chance? Let’s start over again, please?”
He rummaged through his bag and pulled out an emerald–studded bracelet. I could tell with just a glance that this bracelet was of
higher quality than the one Mom had left behind for me.
“I’m sorry for taking your bracelet, Summer. I bought a dozen different ones to replace the one Riley broke. You can treat it as my
apology to you. If you accept the bracelet, I’ll consider it as you forgiving me. We’ll start over again, okay?”
Sincerity was written all over Luke’s face. But I also knew that he was a master at putting on an act. I couldn’t tell the difference
between what was real or fake when it came to him.
“It’s no use. Luke, what do I have to do to make you understand that we’re over? There’s no chance of us getting back together.”
