Luke had even forced his way into my office, but he was thrown out by Eric. He had furiously declared that if Luke dared to show
his face again, he wouldn’t show him any mercy.
My phone began to ring shrilly. It was Luke calling me again. I let out a tired sigh and ultimately decided to pick up the call. An elated gasp came through the receiver followed by a loud swallowing noise.
“Summer, you were finally willing to pick up my call. Why did you leave without a word? Why didn’t you give me a chance to

explain myself? You’re the most important person to me in this world. How will I survive without you?”

I was suddenly filled with doubt. In my past life, Luke had never treated me this way. If anything, this was how he normally behaved with Riley.
“Did you call the wrong number?” I asked him calmly. “I’m not Riley.”
Luke started sobbing. “Summer, I’m so sorry. It’s all my fault, I shouldn’t have blamed you for what Riley did. I did an
investigation and found out that none of what had happened was your fault. It was Riley. She was the one who drove a wedge into
our relationship.
“Summer, can you please come back? We still haven’t had our wedding yet.”
My tone was filled with scorn as I said, “So you think that everything will be alright as long as you pin all the blame on Riley?
Luke, I don’t owe you anything. Our relationship was over from the moment you welcomed Riley back into your arms. Don’t
bother me anymore.”
Luke refused to see reason. He yelled, “Summer, it’s me, Luke! We were together for so long. Are you really going to give up on
our relationship just like that? How could you be so heartless? I only succumbed to temptation once, why can’t you forgive me for
that one mistake?” (1
In a way, Luke was right. Past me hadn’t been able to leave his side. I had always hoped he would turn back and look at me again
one day. But all that fruitless waiting had only amounted to him referring to my accident as a stroke of “bad luck“.
Only in death did I truly give up on him. When I returned to life, I decided to never have any expectations for him.
“Since you cheated, you have to bear the consequences. Luke, we’re over,” I told him slowly.
Luke was still crying.
In a mocking voice, I continued, “Luke, no need to explain anything. That day at the hospital after you pushed me away, you heard my crying, didn’t you? Stop pretending that you care.”
I didn’t wait for his response before disconnecting the call. Right after I cut the call, Caleb emerged from the cabin. He waved at me when he noticed me. I gathered my things and followed him off the ship.
