Chapter 8
It was then that I learned the truth. The so–called big foreign corporation that Aaron had introduced was actually a scam
syndicate.
At first, they paid a large deposit to Allison’s company, leading everyone to believe that the deal had been finalized. However, the
source of the deposit was unclear, and the money was suspected to have been laundered.
Now, Interpol traced the case back to Allison. This situation had escalated significantly, and the day before the police arrived,
Aaron had fled. Before leaving, he even embezzled all the cash from Allison’s company.
Unfortunately, Allison was still as naïve as ever. Even now, as a suspect in a criminal case, she continued to defend Aaron,
believing that he had done nothing wrong.
After further investigation, the police determined that Allison had been unknowingly deceived.
As the former cornerstone of the marketing department, I had publicly resigned on Aaron’s first day in the company. The police
were concerned that there might still be some personal connection between me and Aaron, so they asked me to go in for
questioning as well.
Once the statement was taken, I was preparing to leave the police station when Allison stopped me.
“Eric, I’m sorry,” she said, lowering her head with dark circles under her eyes.
The words “it’s okay” were stuck in my throat. I pressed my lips together, avoiding her gaze as I tried to walk past.
Allison grabbed the hem of my shirt. “I was too foolish before. I was blinded by Aaron’s sweet words, but I did it all for the
company. I just wanted everything to get better. Eric, now I know I was wrong, terribly wrong. Can you come back and help me?”
When I wasn’t needed, I was easily discarded like trash. Now that she needed me, I had suddenly become something precious she
could hold onto. Anyone would find it ridiculous, wouldn’t they?
I turned my head slightly to look at Allison, a faint smile tugging at my lips.
