emergency surgery.
Dominic looked at me, my face full of panic, before finally losing consciousness.
After three hours of surgery, Dominic’s vital signs stabilized. The doctor said the knife hadn’t hit any vital organs, but the deep
wound had caused significant blood loss.
I breathed a sigh of relief, collapsing onto a chair, my gaze fixed on the still–unconscious Dominic, my emotions a tangled mess.
I hadn’t expected him to take a knife for me. Had he been following me?
Yesterday, I’d made things very clear. Why would he…? I had so many questions, but Dominic was still unconscious, forcing me to
keep them bottled up.
Dominic’s parents arrived at the hospital. Seeing their son unconscious in the bed, they were heartbroken. In their eyes, my
disappearance from the wedding two years ago had left their son devastated.
Now, just days after my return, he was hospitalized. They couldn’t help but resent me.
Dominic’s mother broke down, demanding, “What do you want?! What did Dominic ever do to deserve this?”
“You left on your wedding day two years ago, and now he’s in the hospital. Can’t you just stay away from him?!”
I didn’t retort, silently absorbing their anger. There was no need for the elders to know about what happened years ago. And
today, he had undeniably saved me.
As Dominic’s mother lunged forward, a weak voice called out, “Jane.”
Realizing Dominic was awake, his parents rushed to his side.

Chapter 24
“Dominic, how are you feeling? Does it still hurt?”
Dominic shook his head, his gaze fixed on me.
His mother, knowing her son best, saw he wanted to speak to me alone. Reluctantly, given his weakened state, I agreed.
Once his parents left, only Dominic and I remained. I looked at him, still pale.
“Was it worth
it?”
