Dominic’s eyes lit up when he saw me, and he quickly stood up. I, however, felt a headache coming on. I hadn’t expected him to pursue me to my home. He’d always said he disliked interacting with elders. What was he doing here?
My parents pulled me aside and quickly recounted the events of the past two years. If they hadn’t told me, I wouldn’t have believed Dominic’s persistent search. In my eyes, he’d never liked me, so why would he have been so persistent in finding me after I left? His actions were incomprehensible.
But with the wedding approaching, I knew I had to resolve this before the ceremony. I didn’t want any more incidents at the wedding.
Dominic and I sat down face–to–face, engaging in our first calm conversation in two years. My expression was flat. “Say what you need to say, and be quick about it.”
Dominic’s hopeful expression froze, his eyes flashing with hurt. “Jane, do we have to be this distant?”
I tapped my fingers rhythmically on the table, repeating my previous words. Dominic’s heart trembled involuntarily.
“Was it Beverly who caused our breakup?” he asked.
