My parents sat beside me, looking equally troubled.

When I’d canceled the wedding two years ago, I hadn’t told them the real reason, only that I wanted to focus on my research.
Therefore, in their eyes, the responsibility for the canceled wedding lay primarily with our family. Even though they always felt
Dominic’s feelings for me weren’t very deep, they still felt guilty towards him.
Over the past two years, although I hadn’t returned home, Dominic would periodically appear downstairs in our apartment
building.
He never came upstairs, but my parents sensed he was looking for me. In the last six months, it was almost every other day.
My parents had tried to persuade him to stop coming. After all, my decision to cancel the wedding had been firm.
Furthermore, I was in the lab and hadn’t come home, so his vigil was pointless. But they’d witnessed his persistence over the two
years, softening their previously negative impression of him.
They’d even privately discussed trying to persuade me when I next returned; after all, we’d been together for five years, just one
step away from marriage.
However, they’d just received news of my return, and also learned I had a fiancé and was planning a wedding.
They felt bad, feeling guilty towards Dominic.
When Dominic came to the door that afternoon, they knew he’d heard about my return. They decided to let us talk it out, so Dominic would finally move on.
Dominic’s eyes lit up when he saw me, and he quickly stood up. I, however, felt a headache coming on. I hadn’t expected him to pursue me to my home. He’d always said he disliked interacting with elders. What was he doing here?
My parents pulled me aside and quickly recounted the events of the past two years. If they hadn’t told me, I wouldn’t have believed Dominic’s persistent search. In my eyes, he’d never liked me, so why would he have been so persistent in finding me after I left? His actions were incomprehensible.
But with the wedding approaching, I knew I had to resolve this before the ceremony. I didn’t want any more incidents at the wedding.
