Chapter 15
Murphy finally finished reading the letter.
A tear fell silently onto the paper, smudging the ink. He blinked, realizing that his face was already soaked with tears.
“Happiness, fulfillment, and no regrets…”
He stared at the final line of Gemma’s letter, her blessing to him. At that moment, a strange madness overtook him, and he
laughed and cried at the same time.
“Gemma, you’re gone. How could I ever be happy and fulfilled?
“Do you know everything you saw before you left… was a lie? I lied to you. No regrets…‘
་་
Murphy laughed bitterly, and his voice was hollow. “A lie and a departure. Now, both our lives are full of regrets.”
It was a long while before Murphy emerged from the room.
The moment he stepped out, he felt a surreal sensation. It was as if he had left behind an entirely different lifetime.
“Mr. Townsend, I assure you that Ms. Kirk’s cryogenic preservation was conducted legally and ethically,” Andre explained. “Here is the related documentation. Ms. Kirk personally signed every required section.
“I also want to remind you, please don’t think of this separation as a permanent farewell. Ms. Kirk isn’t dead. The freezing process happened instantly, and I can guarantee that none of her cells were harmed. Immediately after the procedure, we
conducted a full assessment of her vitals.
