plan.
Before her fingers could make contact, Murphy’s hand shot out, gripping her throat in a vise–like hold.
Evangeline gasped, choking as Murphy’s powerful grip left her unable to breathe. She struggled desperately. “M–Murphy…
You’re… hurting me! Let go!”
Murphy’s face was expressionless, and he showed no intention of letting her go. Instead, he tightened his grip further.
“Gemma has cancer,” he said, his gaze as icy as a winter storm. “So why was it that on the day I took her to the hospital, the doctor told me she was perfectly fine?”
Evangeline’s expression shifted. There was a flicker of guilt in her eyes.

However, she quickly composed herself and tried to sound calm as she defended herself. “I… I don’t know! I don’t even know the
doctor! Maybe… Maybe he made a mistake during the tests?”
Unfortunately for her, her carefully crafted act no longer fooled Murphy.
“Is that so?” Murphy’s eyes were sharp and unrelenting, like blades cutting through her skin. “Then why did my men just discover that the doctor who examined Gemma that day is your half–brother?”
Evangeline’s face turned deathly pale. She had not anticipated that Murphy would uncover even this.
Evangeline was an illegitimate child. The hospital where Murphy had taken Gemma for her examination was owned by her biological father.
However, Evangeline’s father had never publicly acknowledged her existence, and no one in the outside world knew about her
true identity.
When Murphy initially hired Evangeline to pose as his girlfriend, he had conducted a superficial background check, which did not
reveal her connection to the hospital.
Now, he finally knew. But it was all too late.
