“I know you and Xavier fell in love on your own. But now that you’ve broken up, it’s best that you don’t stay in the same city.
“I understand if you’re upset, but Lucas is your child–you carried him for nine months. Don’t worry about medical expenses.
The Smith family will cover them.
“Just don’t be like those who don’t know their place. That never ends well.”
I didn’t respond.
I just sat there in silence, thinking, “Money really is a powerful thing.”
With a single sentence, “I don’t want you in the same city as us,” she had the power to force me out of the place I had called home
for years.
And there was nothing I could do about it.
I had no choice but to agree.
Because I knew there was no way I could fight the Smith family alone.

Before I left, I sent Xavier a video–evidence of Wendy threatening me.
After everything Lucas had suffered, at the very least, Xavier deserved to know the real truth.
I also made a backup copy of the basement surveillance footage.
I knew my chances were slim.

And through relentless treatment, Lucas slowly began to recover.
His movements weren’t as smooth as other children’s.
But he was healing.
