Chapter 2
Hearing this, Byron’s curiosity was momentarily piqued. Just as he was about to examine the document more closely, Scarlett quickly handed the papers back to Adele and stood up, preparing to leave.
“That’s settled then. I should go now. Goodnight.”
Byron’s curiosity instantly evaporated as he immediately offered to drive her home. Scarlett shook her head, giving Adele an enigmatic look.
“Stay with Adele. After all, time is running short.”
Time running short? Why?
Byron frowned, wanting to press further, but Scarlett was already pushing the door open.
He reflexively grabbed his car keys, tossing out a quick “I’ll just see Scarlett out Back in a minute” before following after her.
The door slammed shut behind him.
From the moment he’d entered until he left, Byron hadn’t spared Adele a single glance.
She was used to it by now. Adele felt nothing as she tucked the agreement away and headed to their bedroom.
After turning off the lights, she gradually drifted to sleep.
Half an hour later, noises came from the doorway, followed by the lights flicking on.
Adele opened her eyes groggily to see Byron pulling open a drawer and placing several boxes of condoms inside.
Then he gathered her into his arms, his warm breath tickling her ear. “Didn’t you used to wait up for me every night? Why so early to bed tonight, hmm?”
That was before. Things would never be like that again.
Adele thought silently, offering a convenient excuse“I’m tired.”
Remembering how he’d abandoned her on the highway, Byron felt an unfamiliar twinge of guilt.
“I’m sorry. I forgot.Even if you’d remembered, would you still have left me there?“The question left Byron speechless.
Silence filled the room for several moments before he finally offered quietly, “I’m sorry, dear. Scarlett twisted her ankle. She’s been terrified of pain since we were kids. That’s why I rushed off. I promise it won’t happen again.”
But this was already the ninth time.
A flicker of bitter amusement crossed Adele’s eyes. “You’re right. It definitely won’t happen again.“After all, they would soon be divorced.
The next morning, Adele woke to find a coffee on her nightstand.
Byron walked in carrying breakfast. “Baby, drink your coffee and come have some breakfast.“Before Scarlett’s return, Adele had experienced this
scene daily.
Back then, she’d mistaken such gestures for love, which was why she’d agreed to Scarlett’s wager.
Only to lose spectacularly.
This time, Adele didn’t accept as usual. Instead, she got up and pulled clothes from the closet. “No thanks. I’m not hungry. I need to go out now. Eat by yourself.”
After getting ready, she grabbed her purse and was about to leave when Byron picked up his jacket, insisting on driving her.
Unable to argue, Adele reluctantly agreed.
Once in the car, she noticed the ornaments were now populated with Scarlett preference.

Byron caught her stating and quickly explained. “I left the windeses down yollarday and all the hanging decorations got soaked. My assistant cleaned it and replaced everything
His assistant? Really?
she duin’t call him out on the he, simply asking, “What about my ornaments? Can I have it back?
Hyron’s expression froze momentarily. “My assistant tossed it. I’ll have her find it right away Hearing him continue the charade, Adele just felt exhausted.
“If it’s gone, forget it. I don’t want it anymore.“He looked surprised. “You really don’t want it back?”
Adele nodded slightly. “I don’t.”
This marriage, this man, all of it–she had finally come to terms with the fact that it was over,
At the club, Adele went straight to Private Suite 908.
The room was already full of people. Her college friends greeted her warmly
“Coming solo today? Is Byron too busy with work?”
Before she could answer, Scarlett, seated in the center, casually jumped in.
“He has a board meeting until eleven, then client negotiations all afternoon. Definitely no time in his schedule.”
Seeing how thoroughly Scarlett knew Byron’s movements, the group started teasing.
“Childhood friends really do know each other best–she’s got his entire schedule memorized!”
