Chapter 11
The son Ismp light illuminated the living room as Byron Luwelton returned from the garage with the gift box, his fingers lingering on the blue velvet surface.
Kunming his fingertips over the unopened packaging, he couldn’t tell what was inside. Unlike Adele’s usual straightforward gifts, this one was elaborately wrapped. The thought piqued his curiosity.
His phone vibrated jarringly on the table. The name “Scarlett” dragged him back to reality.
“Byron, where are you? The woman’s voice on the other end was slightly slured, probably because she hadn’t fully sobered up.
“Home, What’s wrong?” Hearing Scarlett’s voice, Byron stopped unwrapping the gift and unconsciously softened his tone.
“I don’t feel well. Why aren’t you by my side?”
At Scarlett’s sweet, vulnerable voice, Byron set down the gift box, grabbed his coat and car keys, and headed for the door, phone still pressed to his ear.
“I’ll be right there. Just wait a moment.”
By the time he arrived at Scarlett’s apartment, dawn was breaking. After spending the entire night comforting her until she fell asleep, an exhausted Byron collapsed on the couch, still wrapped in his coat.
When he woke, it was already afternoon. Scarlett had just emerged from the bathroom after a shower and found Byron sitting somewhat dazed on the couch.
Still in her pajamas, she sat down beside him and handed him a towel. “Baby, dry my hair for me.”
Snapping back to reality, Byron took the towel and gently dried her hair. When it was mostly dry, he got up to retrieve the hair dryer from the
bathroom.
“Scarlett, about what you said at the party yesterday…” Byron finally spoke when her hair was dry, but she cut him off before he could finish.
“My confession wasn’t impulsive. I’m your girlfriend now.” Scarlett reclined in his arms, her voice seductive. “What would you like to do with your girlfriend?”
“That’s not it. I wanted to ask when Adele and I got divorced. I can’t reach her at all.”
“Byron, I thought you’d be overjoyed about us being together. Wasn’t Adele just your backup when you couldn’t have me? Now that I’m yours, why do you care about someone who doesn’t matter?” Scarlett’s tone turned cold.
Byron felt an unexpected twinge in his chest at her words.
“How should I know? She messaged me saying she divorced you and even showed me the divorce papers. I thought you were so eager to be with me that you ended things with her. She didn’t even show up for your birthday yesterday, yet here you are thinking about her.”
“Divorce papers? I divorced her?” Byron was shocked. Had he really been divorced without his knowledge, and now was being slandered?
He wasn’t without feelings for Adele DelaSalle. After all, for years, whenever Scarlett had rejected him, Adele had been there for him.
He had only been spending more time with Scarlett because she had just moved back to here and didn’t have many friends. And now Adele wanted a divorce over this?
Seeing Byron’s darkening expression, Scarlett instinctively blamed everything on Adele.
“She threatened me, said if I didn’t help her, she’d spread rumors in our college alumni group that I was a homewrecker, trying to ruin my reputation!”
“Really?” Byron could hardly believe that Adele–always gentle–spoken with him, always gracious with others–would do something like this.
“You don’t believe me?” Hearing Byron’s response, Scarlett glared at him angrily.
Seeing Scarlett’s sulking figure, Byron softened his tone, coaxing gently, “It’s just… hard to understand. I thought you two were close in college?”

Chapter 11
“She was never my friend. She’s always been jealous of me. If she hadn’t told she liked you and introduced me to Xavier, I would never have Introduced her to you”
“She introduced you to Xavier Tiyun? Byron was successfully led away from the original question.
Having achieved her goal, Scarlett enthusiastically worked to tarnish Adele’s age in Byron’s mind. After all, they had been together for years,
Though Byron had always pursued her, Scarlett worried he had developed feelings for Adele, who had been by his side all along. Why else would he still be thinking about Adele after learning about the divorce, even when faced with her own confession? She wouldn’t allow it.
“She’s the one who introduced me to Xavier, and then pressured me to introduce you to her. She forced me to set you two up, threatening to convince Xavier to break up with me if I didn’t. I was tricked into ignoring my true feelings…”
