Chapter 18
“What a mess…” David sighed. “I never should’ve forced you two together in the first place. I ended up pushing you into a miserable marriage and let Tess down.
“Forget it. Come home tonight. I’ll have Tess come too. I need to talk to you both.”
David hung up the phone after that.
Tessa was in the kitchen preparing a meal when she got David’s call.
“Tess, where are you? Did Ethan bully you again? Tell me what he did. I’ll teach him a lesson for you.”
The sound of David’s caring voice made Tessa’s nose sting with emotion. After everything she had endured these past few days, she suddenly felt the urge to tell him everything.
“David…” Her voice trembled. “If I wanted to divorce Ethan… would you support me?”
There was a long silence on the other end before David sighed heavily, “So it’s come to this after all.”
He had always said that if things didn’t work out, they could divorce. Nevertheless, deep down, he’d hoped they could make it work. But now that she had said it, it meant that she and Ethan had truly reached the end.
“Come home and have dinner with me tonight, alright? We’ll talk about the divorce.”
“Okay.”
Since David hadn’t objected, Tessa felt a weight lift off her chest.
Of everyone in the Ziegler family, David had always been the kindest to her. When she decided she wanted a divorce, the first thing she felt was guilt toward him.
Tessa turned off the stove and went to her room to change. She tidied herself up quickly and applied a light touch of makeup to conceal her pale face.
It was still early when she arrived at the Ziegler residence. The sun hadn’t fully set yet. David was sitting in the garden, enjoying
the view.
When he saw Tessa, he smiled and waved her over. “Tess, come sit with me.”
“David,” she greeted him, smiling as she walked over.
David studied her closely and worriedly said, “You’ve lost weight.”
That one sentence nearly brought tears to Tessa’s eyes.
Only someone who truly cared about her would notice such changes. Moreover, David’s voice was so gentle and full of warmth and concern. It reminded her of her dad.

“I can tell that you haven’t been doing well lately,” David continued, sighing. “Ethan has failed you.”
Tessa said nothing but didn’t deny it.
“Well, if you two are going to divorce, then so be it. But even if you do, I’ll still be your family, you understand? start
keeping your distance from me.”
Tessa smiled. “Of course. I’ll always take you as my own grandpa.”
“What are you two talking about?” A voice interrupted
Tessa turned and saw Ethan walking over. The smile on her face instantly vanished, and she quietly shifted to stand on David’s
other side.
Ethan frowned slightly when he saw her deliberately put distance between them.
“You’re here,” David said curtly. He scoffed without bothering to hide his displeasure.
“What else could we talk about? Of course it’s about your divorce! If you dislike Tess that much, you might as well go through with it. Anyway, Tess wants a divorce too“.
Ethan’s expression turned gloomy. He couldn’t believe that she’d actually brought up the divorce in front of David.
He stared at Tessa coldly. “I haven’t agreed to it.”
“Who cares whether you agree or not,” David snapped. “Tess wants out. You’ve wronged her. I’m not taking your side. Whether you want to or not, you’re getting divorced!”
Ethan’s tone turned frosty. “Grandpa, this is between me and her. You shouldn’t interfere.”
