Since that fateful night, everything had changed. The promise that Amira had made was never fulfilled. For the past five months, I have been flogged constantly to the point that I do not know what pain was anymore.
I was ridiculed by Max, laughed at by the maids, and ignored by Amira anytime I requested to see her. Why? What changed? Was I wrong to believe that my sister would help me? That in her heart she would know that I would never hurt anyone.
I had experienced far worse pain and bullying, but the emotional pain inflicted by those I considered family hurt far more than my physical wounds. I felt like a fool for believing her…but what could I do?
It would get better, I always say to myself, I believed one day it would all be good.
“Good evening, Alpha and Luna,” I greeted as I ran into them on my way to pick up the mail.
The couple stopped and turned to me, as always Amira’s eyes were devoid of sympathy but that little smile was there, Max on the other hand looked bored and disgusted by my presence. I will never forget that he had literally thrown up at my feet when we realized we were mates. And he had laughed and called me a skinny, bony wretched human, he rejected me without hesitation, saying the goddess was playing a stupid joke.
That had hurt way more than the fact he had poured hot tea on my hand this morning because I had added too much sugar.
“Wow…just the person you were looking for, darling,” Max said to Amira, placing his arms around Amira’s waist.
“You are right, I would like to talk to you Liana, it’s urgent,” Amira said, making me raise my eyebrow, “But me and the alpha are on an evening stroll, you shall be summoned to the alpha’s office soon. Continue with your work.”
No more words were spoken as she and Max continued with their walk.
At exactly thirty minutes later I was summoned to the alpha’s officer as I reached the room, my heart began to race, and I could hear giggles and moans, I hoped I did not intrude on a private moment, it would be very much embarrassing if I were to see my sister in an intimate position with a man.
I took a deep breath, bit my lip, and closed my eyes before mustering the courage to knock.
“Amira, Alpha, it’s me,” I announced.
“Come in,” Max replied, and I quickly entered the room. As soon as the door closed behind me, my eyes fell upon Max sitting behind his desk with Amira sitting down on his lap. It stung of course, but the fact that he had rejected me numbed the pain.
“You summoned me,” I said, my eyes fixed on them.
“That’s right. I will be attending the Lycan’s King mating ball as an honored guest in three weeks and Amira will be by my side. She needs a maid who would look after her, so you shall be coming with us, Olivia will be coming with us as well.”
I raised an eyebrow, “Olivia? Why? She is a healer, not a maid.”
And she was my only friend in this whole place. The only one who cared about me, the only friend who went against the judgment of the judges to heal my scars, my plain back was because of her, but that always angered the whipper. No one knew who healed me, not yet, I had done everything to protect her so why…why ask about her now?
“She would be coming with us because…Amira is pregnant.”
