“Do you really think he left you because of me?” I asked, crouching down. “Did you think that he would go back to you if you pretended to lose your memory?
“Well, you’re right. Now he’s yours forever.”
I turned and left.
Zachary ran out after me.
“I know you’re hurt, and I know it’s all my fault,” he said. “But I really hope that you can give me another chance.”
“What about Sienna? Are you really going to leave her?” I asked.
“I’ll deal with her. I promise you that she will never bother us ever again.”
He looked so determined, like he had finally realized how much damage his past actions had caused to our relationship.
“I admit that I have made a lot of mistakes in the past, but I hope that you can give me a chance to make things right.”
I was silent for a moment. I didn’t know how to feel. All I knew was that his behavior had long eroded my love and trust for him.
“I need time, Zachary,” I told him eventually.
He nodded and did not continue to push. “I’ll respect whatever decision you make.”
I turned away. My heart was plunged into chaos.
At home, I sat by the window and looked out, my mind reeling. Everything I had ever felt for him, the laughter and the tears,
replayed in my mind.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm myself. I needed to get myself together and think carefully about my
future with Zachary.
I couldn’t let the shadows of the past continue to haunt me.
I needed an answer-
-one that would bring me peace. Besides that, I needed time and space to reevaluate our relationship.
I looked out into the night and made up my mind.
The next day, I called Zachary out for a meeting.
He arrived right on time, looking nervous and apprehensive. “Have you made your decision, Evie?”
Instead of answering him, I brought him to the hospital yard.
It was a warm and sunny day. I took a deep breath, taking in the scent of fresh grass mixed with the sterile smell of disinfectant.
“Do you remember? You were here with Sienna that day, taking care of her so attentively. I had just been discharged, too,” I said,
turning my back to Zachary. “You will never know how much it hurt me or how disappointed I was in you that day.”
Zachary walked up to me, his eyes filled with remorse. “I’m sorry, Evie. I know this was all my fault. Please give me another
chance. We can have another child.”
He took out the baby bracelet, carefully wrapped and protected. “I never gave this to Sienna. She said that on purpose to provoke
you.”
My heart clenched painfully at the sight of the bracelet. “Did you tell me that just so that I would forgive you?”
He shook his head fervently. “No, not at all. I know I have a lot to make up for, so I just want one more chance.”
I took the bracelet. Without saying anything, I brought him to a ward.
The woman I had saved the day before was in the room.
“Hey, I’m here to check on you and the baby,” I said.
The baby was sleeping soundly in her arms.
Would my child look as lovely?
My heart clenched. I could’ve had a beautiful child, too,
Walking out of the ward, I returned the bracelet to him.
2/3
“We could’ve had a beautiful child like tha
that, too,” I told him. “Our child would’ve worn that bracelet if you had only turned back and looked at me. Our child would still be here.
“But you abandoned them.”
Without looking at him, I turned and left.
After a while, a heartbreaking wail echoed through the hospital corridor.
I walked out of the hospital without looking back.
Goodbye, Zachary Harrow.
Goodbye, my little one whom I never got to meet.
My new life was about to begin.
The sun was shining, and the weather was perfect.
