Everyone stared at him, confused. No one understood why he was so upset.
It sounded like he was defending Jaycie, but they had said these things before. In fact, they had even said some of these things to her face, and Cole and Jaycie had never said anything in response. Why was he reacting this way now?
Finally, Wayne Horton, sitting closest to Cole, furrowed his brow. He was the first to speak, breaking the heavy silence. But even as he spoke, he didn’t take Cole’s mood seriously. He assumed Cole was just annoyed by all the noise they were making and gave a small, mocking laugh.
“Still in a bad mood, Cole? We know you care about her, but don’t worry. She won’t really walk away from you; you’re her only ticket to a good life! Trust me, within half a month, she’ll come crawling back to you, and then you’ll be the one calling the shots.”
Just as Wayne finished speaking, Cole lifted his head and fixed him with a fierce, icy stare. His voice was cold as he said,
“Apologize.”
Wayne blinked, not understanding what Cole meant. Then Cole spoke again. “Apologize to her.”
It was only then that Wayne finally understood. Cole was actually upset because they had belittled Jaycie.
“Cole, why are you getting so worked up? The guys didn’t say anything wrong. She’s a poor girl who hooked up with you for the
money. You never said anything when we said all that before. What’s gotten into you
today?”
