During the brief silence that Jaycie left between them, Cole persisted in calling her name a few more times. Each time, a wave of
annoyance swept over her.
“Mr. Benson, you’re about to settle down with someone else. You should be mindful of boundaries. As for those photos, I’m sure
when Ms. Wise moves into the villa and sees them, she won’t be happy. So, I burned them all. And I don’t think it’s necessary for us to see each other again. You’re about to marry someone else. Why do you want to meet with me?”
After hearing that the photos had all been burned, Cole felt his heart break. What hurt even more, though, was her blunt refusal.
“Jaycie, I never agreed to break up. What I have with Eileen isn’t what you think. The only person I truly love is you. How could
you just abandon me like this?”
By the time he finished speaking, she could even hear a slight hitch in his voice, and it made her fall into silence for a moment.
She had rarely seen him cry.
They had been together for five years, and aside from this moment, she’d only seen him cry once–during that car accident
they’d both been in. He had been the one more seriously hurt, but when he woke up and saw her injuries, he wept uncontrollably.
It was hard to reconcile that image with the ruthless businessman he was known to be.
If any one of Benson Corp’s partners had seen him like that, they’d have been completely stunned.
This was the second time she heard him cry.
Jaycie had never denied Cole’s love for her in the past, but that was exactly why, when he agreed to marry Eileen to satisfy his family’s pressure, she could clearly sense his heart beginning to drift.
