Chapter 38
The surgery lasted a total of 5 hours, but at last, the affected Valves in Evangeline’s heart had been repaired and her condition stabilized.
Looking down at her first successful surgery in years, Ivory knew she should have felt pride and joy, but at this moment, the only thing she felt was a tinge of regret.
Perhaps she should have left Evangeline to die. All the pain and suffering, she had been through in life was all because of Evangeline.
Then, wouldn’t that mean that if she had died, everything would have gone back to the way i has been before she and her mother came along?
it
No, Ivory shook the thought off. Nothing can ever be the same, even if Evangeline were to die.
“Good Job, V.” Kael, clasping her shoulder, praised.
Ivory offered him a half hearted and tired smile. Yeah, you too.” She glanced back at Evangeline for a few seconds before speaking again. “I’m gonna head out now…”
Kael nodded. “Sure, you go on ahead, I’ll reach out to you once everything’s wrapped up here.”
Ivory offered him a simple nod before she headed towards the back exit. Once she was gone, Kael walked out of the ER, discarding his operation clothes as he stepped out.
Immediately he walked through the ER door, he was ambushed by Lionel and Samantha.
“Where’s our daughter?” Samantha asked. “Was the surgery successful? Is she alright?”
“Doctor, please say something. Is she alright?”
“Your daughter is fine.” Kael informed. “The surgery was successful. However, she’s being moved to an ICU to be monitored for a few days. Once we’re sure her condition has improved, we’ll carry out the final surgery.”
Η
The news brought tears to both Lionel and Samantha’s eyes.
“Thank God,” They breathed in unison.
Kael simply nodded, then glanced at the person behind them. Gadreel Odegaar.
However, his reaction was more tuned down than Kael had expected. In fact, it almost seemed
like his mind was else where.
Which in fact, it was.
Although the news of Evangeline’s surgery being successful was good to hear, that joy was side tracked by Kael’s presence.
Gadreel had recognized him in one glance. He was one of the guys that had come to meet Ivory
that day at the hotel.
His eyes darkened at the memory.
“And you are?” He asked.
“Assistant doctor, Kael.” He briefly introduced.
“Assistant doctor? Assistant of who?”
“Arnett. She was the one who performed the surgery.”
All at once, as if it never existed in the first place, the dark Shadow that had fallen over Gadreel’s eyes disappeared and was replaced with surprise, as well as genuine curiosity.
“Arnett?” He repeated the name. “She did the surgery?”
Kael simply responded with a nod and attempted to leave, but Gadreel blocked him.
“Where is she?” He asked. “I need to speak to her She’s going to be the one completing Evangeline’s surgery so I need to-”
“I don’t think that’s for you to decide.” Kael interrupted. “Whether she does the final surgery or not is up to Arnett. Don’t you dare think you can make that decision for her.”
Gadreel was caught off guard by Kael’s sudden hostility.
He narrowed his eyes dangerously. “I think that’s for us to discuss, assistant.” He responded spitefully. “Now tell me, where is Arnett.”
Kael fell silent, but the glare on his face said volume.
His hostility was uncalled for, but even at that, Gadreel did not allow it affect him. He stood his ground.
After a few seconds, Kael suddenly brushed past Gadreel. “I cannot tell you that. I’ll take my leave first as I have other things to attend to.”
And with that, he walked away. Gadreel wanted to call out to him, but knew it was a loss cause.
He needed to find another way to-
As if the universe was in track with thought, the door opened and another assisting doctor stepped out.
Gadreel, seeing another opportunity, was quick to approach him.
“The head doctor, Doctor Arnett, where is she?”
“The lead doctor? She left a couple of minutes ago.”
She had already left? Gadreel frowned.
Suddenly, the doctor added. “It hasn’t been long. If you rush now, you should be able to see
Chachi
her,” He thought of a few seconds before adding. “She wore her hair up in a messy updo, so
it’s hard to miss her.
Gadreel nodded and after instructing Lionel and Samantha to keep an eye on Evangeline, he hurried towards the entrance, all the while keeping his eyes sharp for the description.
At some point, he regretted being in such a rush and not asking for a hair color, but then out of the corner of his eyes, he saw the sliding door parting and he spotted a lady with messy. updo standing outside.
Relief flooded his chest but recognition was just as fast and he realized, as the lady waved a taxi over, that she was none other than Ivory.
Immediately, a frown marred his face. Ivory?
She was the only one with a messy updo just like the assisting doctor had described and by the entrance. Could it be….
As absurd as the thought was, Gadreel allowed himself entertain it.
He allowed himself to entertain the fact that Ivory…might be Arnett. Wouldn’t that come to explain why Kael knew her and why his friend request had been rejected.
But as absurd as it may look, despite the two points he had just put together, Gadreel needed a way to confirm, solidly.
And he knew just how to do that.
Before the taxi could drive off, Gadreel pulled out his phone and clicked on Arnett’s contact again.
He would have the answer to his speculation the moment he sends a friend request and Ivory gets a notification.
Without wasting another moment, Gadreel clicked on the request button and immediately, a look of surprise painted his face.
He…he had been blocked by Arnett?!
