Chapter 25
The race started off with a bang. Both the cars sped, neck to neck at first until the Arrogant driver took the lead, but Ivory wasn’t about to lose.
She had the experience, she knew what she was doing. Besides, this wasn’t her first time.
Granted, the driver was skilled. But compared to her, he was an amateur and Ivory planned on showing him just how much.
She maneuvered the course, drifting at every turn and avoiding every obstacle, all the while keeping a smile on her lips.
She was entertained, unlike her boring daily life so far. Emma could see this, at the same time, she could see her life flashing before her eyes.
Ivory had driven fast the first time, but because it was just as warm up and she wasn’t against someone who pushed her to perform better, she had driven slower than the current time.
Now, with a competitor, the race had become heated and their opponent passed them for the
third time.
“Don’t worry,” Almost as if sensing the anxious fear within Emma, Ivory spoke, keeping her eyes on the track. “We won’t lose.”
The confidence In her words didn’t go unnoticed by Emma.
She knew exactly why Ivory had agreed to the race.
This was a game for her, a form of stress relief and an outlet.
Breathing in, Emma decided to let go of the tension and worry that had been building up
inside her.
She sat back and allowed Ivory to do her thing.
The final stretch was ahead. The cars were side by side, but at the very last moment, Ivory’s
car zoomed past.
“Whoooooo!” Emma cheered and seconds later, their car came to a stop. “Yes, you did it!”
She celebrated, rushing over to Ivory as they got out of the car, and rewarding her with a kiss on the cheek
Ivory chuckled, but gladly accepted her reward.
“A fine race,” The other driver commented, approaching them. He took off his helmet and held it under his armpit while his other free hand extended out for a handshake. “And a fair win you bagged.”
Ivory took his hand. “Your skills were all that bad, I’m impressed.”
“Well,” the driver’s smile widened. “Thank you. I’ve been practicing for a long time.” He released her hand and continued. “I’m Cameron, by the way”
“Ivy,” Came her response as she glanced at Emma who was visibly glaring at the driver, Cameron as she now knew him.
It was clear that Emma felt uncomfortable in his presence. Perhaps it was wise to leave as soon as possible.
‘Lovely name. So, tell, since I lost the bet, what do you want?”
His voice drew Ivory’s attention again. Looking back at him, she thought for a few seconds before answering.
“I don’t have any particular request now, but I’ll be sure to reach out to you if I do.” Flashing him a tight smile, she turned around and beckoned for Emma to follow her.
As she walked away from him, Cameron called out. “And how do you plan on doing that? We obviously can’t contact each other through thin air. How about-”
“The track can serve as our middle man,” Ivory interjected. “We both frequent here, so, whenever I have a request, I’ll let them know and they’ll send the message across.”
Without another word, she and Emma turned and walked away, leaving Cameron to stand with
a small frown on his face.
This was a first, having a girl who didn’t fall at his feet and beg for his phone number and she even outright rejected it when he suggested It.
It was new, but also intriguing and Cameron couldn’t help but smile.
He liked the feeling. It gave him a sense of challenge and he was going to make sure he didn’t fail.
After all, he always gets what he wants and Ivy was the most interesting woman he had seen in a long while.
He didn’t plan on letting her get away.
“What an annoying prick.” Emma, after having left the racing track, huffed as she sat in the back seat of the ride Ivory had ordered.
Glancing at her, Ivory could once again see that she wasn’t in a good mood and it was obviously because of Cameron.
She couldn’t help but ask. “Do you know him? I mean, back there, it clearly seemed like you two knew each other.” She added the last part when Emma fell silent and avoided her gaze.
TUE COMPRES
“Em?” She nudged her shoulder and her friend finally caved.
“Alright, yes. I know him. We’re… he’s…” She hesitated before finally vomiting the words out “He’s my brother!”
Ivory was shocked, genuinely. She had never heard of Emma having a brother, so why all of a
sudden….
“My step brother.” Emma corrected herself, as well as answered the questions written in broad daylight on Ivory’s face.
“Step brother? How, when?”
“When I was younger, my mom divorced my biological dad and met Cameron’s father shortly after. He’s a wealthy fashion brand owner. My mother took a liking to him and they got married and well, he became my step brother. He’s three years older than me.”
13
nodded slowly. So this was her step brother, but why didn’t Emma tell her?
“It’s because he’s an asshole,” Emma said and Ivory realized she had voiced the question aloud. “And a very rude one at that. During high school, he vandalized the entire school building because of a girl he liked. That was his way of getting her attention.”
“It didn’t work, though. It only caused the school to ban him from the premises and his dad had to pay a hefty sum to keep things quiet. Afterwards, he sent him away to study aboard.”
“If you ask me, it wasn’t a befitting punishment
Hearing this, Ivory could only but nod her head. Family troubles, she knew all about that.
“Doesn’t sound like a nice guy,” She commented. “And you seem to dislike him quite a lot. Did he bully you or something?”
Emma shook her head. “Cameron might be a scum, but he didn’t stoop that low. We were never close enough for that kind of thing to happen either. We were just…” She frowned a bit. ” There.”
Ivory was silent for a few seconds as she stared at Emma. For a brief moment, she felt envy, not over the fact that her friend had a step brother, but over the fact that, even though they didn’t get along and were only ‘there‘ together, there was still an existence bond.
Unlike her.
