Chapter 10
On the other side of town, at Ruby’s apartment, a woman’s breathless pleas filled the room. Only then did Grayson finally let her
- go.
He grasped her wrist, his voice hoarse. “Pregnant, and still not behaving?”
Ruby leaned into his embrace, her tone soft, almost teasing. “I was just afraid you’d hold it in too long and feel miserable.”
He let out a quiet laugh, pinching her cheek. “Sounds to me like a certain someone is jealous.”
She huffed and turned her face away, her words laced with jealousy. “You’re leaving us tomorrow to marry another woman. Am I not allowed to feel a little bitter?”
His expression darkened. He let go and looked down at the woman lying on the bed, resentment flickering in her eyes. His voice carried a warning. “Ruby, as long as you don’t cause trouble in front of Violet, I’ll spoil you however you want. But if you forget your place and drag our affairs in front of her…”
Ruby’s face stiffened.
She hadn’t expected him to issue such a cold warning, even with her carrying his child. But she had stayed by his side for over a year, and if she had one talent, it was knowing when to back down. Reading the room was second nature.
She blinked away a few tears, wrapped her arms around his neck, and choked out, “Grayson, I understand. I never wanted to take Miss Hudson’s place. She can’t hear, so I only hid under the table to tease you.‘
He knew there was resentment buried in her heart, but given her condition, he could afford to be lenient. With a sigh, he pulled her into his arms. “Alright, don’t be sad. Once the honeymoon is over, I’ll spend a whole week with you, alright? You don’t have to worry. Even after I’m married, I won’t neglect you or our child.”
Ruby’s lips curved into a smile. She hooked her arms around his neck, her breath warm against his skin. “Then I’ll have to make the most of tonight.”
His eyes darkened. In the next moment, he pressed her beneath him.
That night, the room was filled with sounds that left no space for words.
Early the next morning, Grayson was already up.
As he adjusted his tie in front of the mirror, Ruby watched from the bed, a flicker of jealousy in her gaze. She slipped behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist. Then, catching him off guard, she left a faint lipstick mark on his collar.
He assumed she was simply reluctant to part with him. Turning around, he kissed the top of her head. “Rest well and take care of yourself. I’ll come see you in a few days.”

He crouched down, placing a hand on her still–flat stomach. His expression softened. “Be good, little one. Stay safe inside your mother’s belly. Daddy will be back soon.”
On the way to the wedding venue, Grayson glanced at his phone. He had expected a message from Violet, reminding him not to be late. But when he opened the chat, it was empty.
Even in the past few days, she hadn’t sent him a single message. The video call he had initiated yesterday was their only contact
in three days.
A strange unease stirred in his chest. Then he remembered her mentioning a surprise during the call. He pushed away the
discomfort. She was probably too busy preparing for the wedding and the surprise.
Violet had always been sensible. She wouldn’t get upset just because he’d said he was busy with work.
The closer he got to the venue, the faster his heart raced.
He had waited so long for this day. It was finally happening.
