Chapter 8
Jasper looked as though he was dealt a devastating blow, repeating over and over, “It’s not like that,” but even he couldn’t refute
the truth.
Because everything I’d said was true, and he knew it.
“Selena, I was an idiot, a complete fool. But I’ve only ever loved you. I lost my mind for a moment. I was seduced by her…”
“Don’t pin all the blame on someone else, Jasper. You’re neither noble nor innocent. It was you who failed to control yourself. I’ve already had a lawyer draft a new divorce agreement. When it’s ready, you should sign it. Let’s part ways peacefully.”
With that, I turned and walked into my room without sparing him another glance.
The next day, the divorce agreement arrived in my hands. The moment Jasper saw it, he tore it to shreds.
“I’m not signing this, Selena. If I couldn’t win you back in three years, I’ll take three more or thirty years if I have to. I’ll show
you I’ve changed.
“Selena, can’t you just try to see me for who I am now? We were so close once. We promised we’d never part.”
His eyes reddened, and as memories of the past washed over us, silence stretched between us.
Jasper and I had fallen into a strange cycle.
I was determined to end things, and he was just as determined to hold on.
We were like two lines heading in opposite directions, each striving toward an entirely different goal.
One day, I noticed Jasper’s absence outside the hotel. Breathing a sigh of relief, I thought he had finally given up.
But then I received a call from his mother, informing me that Jasper had been hospitalized.
When I arrived at the hospital, he was hooked up to an IV.
I realized then how little attention I’d paid to him in recent weeks, worn down by his persistence.
Looking at him now, I saw how much weight he’d lost–his cheeks hollow, his eyes sunken. Was it due to exhaustion?
When he noticed me, he smiled faintly, as if trying to comfort me.
“Selena, you’re here. Have you eaten breakfast? I was going to bring it to you, but I fainted in the stairwell instead. I’m sorry I made you worry. By the way, you’ve been wanting a divorce, right? I’ve signed the papers. Let’s end this.”
The divorce agreement had been redrafted. He had transferred 80% of his assets to me.
“Why?”
His sudden change in attitude left me uneasy.
