“I’ve had this ring ready for a long time. It’s engraved with our name. I was going to ask for your forgiveness once you regained
your memory. I don’t care what happened between you and Jonah because it was all
my fault.
“And I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to you–I’ll give you whatever you want. Gina, I love you. I really do. Please forgive
You loved me so much—just forgive me this once, okay?”

He held the sparkling diamond ring out to me, my name etched into the band.
Jonah swatted the ring out of Eric’s hand. “Eric, from the moment you betrayed Gina, you lost the right to love her! Since you’ve
betrayed her, why shouldn’t she be with someone else? She’s my girlfriend now–you’ll never get another chance!”
Jonah’s words felt oddly familiar. I had said the exact same thing to Lila that day by the lake at the resort.
Eric’s face was streaked with tears as he shook his head repeatedly. “No, this can’t be.”
He crawled to pick up the ring, muttering, “No, that’s impossible. Gina loves me she loves me so much. When I was sick, she stayed up all night taking care of me. If I mentioned something I liked, she’d stand in line for it, even if it meant losing her sleep.
“When I stayed out drinking, she’d sit on the couch waiting for me all night. She said she wanted to be with me forever, to live happily ever after with me. She said it! She loves me! She definitely loves me!”
Eric stood there, trembling and crying. He was consumed by regret and unwilling to accept the truth.
