Eric stood there stiffly, and I could feel Lila’s jealous gaze burning into my back.
Back in the room, while searching for a thick coat, I could feel Jonah watching me with an odd expression. When I looked up, his gaze was the same as always–gentle and steady.
I smiled and wrapped a scarf around his neck too. Catching my hand, he kissed it deeply, seemingly seizing every chance for intimacy ever since we crossed that line.
Once we were dressed, we headed to the lake, which was covered in a thick layer of ice. A few of the trust fund babies had already found good spots, and Eric and Lila were on the other side,
Lila was talking about grilling the fish they’d catch while he seemed distracted. He finally said, “Lila, I need to talk to you.”
She looked panicked, knowing what lie was about to say. Suddenly, she spotted us and called out, “Gina, you’re here!”
I nodded at her. Then, Jonah led me to another part of the lake. Just as we were about to start drilling through the ice, we heard a commotion from Eric’s side.
“Eric, be careful!”
“Lila!”
“Ah!”
The hole in the ice was too big, and with no experience in ice fishing, Eric had fallen into the freezing water.
Ignoring her own safety, Lila jumped in after him and dragged him out–only to be swallowed by the icy water herself. The resort’s lifeguards pulled her out and rushed her to the hospital.

The staff whispered among themselves, baffled as to why she had jumped in when the lifeguards were already on their way. There
was no need for her to risk herself.
Also, if something had gone wrong, the resort would likely take the blame for a failed rescue.
Eric didn’t hear any of this because he had followed the ambulance to the best hospital in the city. The doctor said Lila had hit her head on the ice, causing a concussion. Combined with the shock and a fever, she would need a few days to recover.
When Jonah and I arrived home, I couldn’t help but be impressed by Lila’s resolve. She was even willing to risk her life to get what she wanted. Now, it was just a matter of whether it was enough to keep Eric by her side.
As Jonah held me in bed, he murmured, “If I’m ever in danger, don’t come to save me. You staying safe is more important to me.”
I looked up at him, sensing that he knew I wouldn’t risk myself for him.
“If you’re ever in danger, I’d do anything to save you,” he added seriously.
I touched his face. “We’ll both be fine. Nothing will happen to either of us.”
That night, he was more passionate than ever.
