Mom saw me smash the cup and immediately pulled her son into her arms, shielding him like a mother hen.
“I’m only asking for a kidney! How can you be so heartless? Don’t forget, I’m your mother! I gave birth to you! Helping your
brother is the least you could do! If I had known you’d be this cold, I never would have had you!”
The boy in her arms wriggled free, his glare burning into me. “Mom! I don’t want anything from this piece of trash! You said I
was your only child!”
I let out a dry laugh, clapping my hands slowly. “Wow. Bravo. Great performance.”
Mom froze.
At that moment, Yannick stood up.
She scowled. “Yulia! How can you mess around when this involves a kid? You’re giving your kidney whether you like it or not!”
Yannick stepped in front of me. “I’d like to see anyone try.”
I took a deep breath and patted his back. “Let me deal with this.”
I stepped forward and, for the first time in over a decade, I looked my mother straight in the eye. “You want my kidney? Then
come and take it. Kill me if you have to.”
I stumbled as I left the restaurant.
Yannick helped me home, but downstairs, his phone rang. I did not wait for him to finish his call. I just waved and mouthed,
“Goodbye.”
When I got inside, I glanced out the window–he was already gone. But before I could even take off my coat, there was a knock at
the door.
I opened it, and Yannick stood outside.
“We need to talk”
1 stepped aside. “About what?”
He looked exhausted. “The company’s been keeping me busy. Are you feeling better?”
I knew his game. Whenever he was mad but wanted to reconcile, he would pretend nothing had happened.
“Oh, you mean when you were all smiles at the hospital? I’ve never seen you look that happy before.”
The words slipped out as my defenses shot up.
Yannick blinked, then chuckled like he had just remembered something. “That was my cousin. You met her once when she was
little. Her family moved overseas.”

He looked so serious that I did not know what to say.
“Oh.”
“Yulia, don’t you think you owe me an explanation?”
“For what? I already told you everything.”
His eyes locked onto mine. “You said you liked me for years. I never knew.”
“Of course, you didn’t. You never even looked at me.”
Yannick groaned, rubbing his temples. “Yulia! Do you even have a heart?”
Then, he started listing things down.

“Who brought you food? Tutored you? When we were in university, who took the plane for hours just to be here with you? Who stayed up all night at the hospital when you were sick?”
I cut him off, “You said your mom made you do it. Every holiday, you’d whine about how she forced you to come back. When I was sick, you only stayed because you felt bad for her. And now, what? I should be grateful?”
Yannick opened his mouth and then sighed. “I just… I thought you wouldn’t accept it if I made it obvious. So, I made excuses… to
protect…” He hesitated. “To protect my pride.”
