Chapter 4
Rebecca’s POV
Elara saw me immediately but pretended not to, raising her still–injured hand on purpose and asking Jonah sweetly.
“Jonah, once the pack elders arrive tomorrow, I’ll go with you to sever our mate bond. That way, I won’t get in the way of your mating ceremony with Rebecca.”
Her eyes were even redder than the blood dripping from her palm.
Jonah gently patted her head and coaxed her,
“Silly girl, just wait a little longer. Rebecca’s not going anywhere. She’s so obsessed with me, she’d wait three or even five more years if I asked her to.”
I stared at their retreating backs, and my wolf growled internally. “Pathetic mutt.”
I chuckled bitterly, then booked myself a hotel.
The frustration in my heart made even my wolf restless. She wanted out–so I shifted and went for a run in the woods.
After one lap, I unexpectedly ran into Jonah and Elara, walking hand–in–hand under the moonlight–something Jonah never did. He hated night walks. Elara leaned against him gently, whispering sweet nothings.
I had no interest in listening to their cheesy lines. I turned around and headed the other way, not realizing someone had started following me.
Trying to hide in the bushes, I felt a sudden sting on my neck. My vision began to blur.
Sensing something was wrong, I quickly shifted back and got dressed, hurrying toward my car. But before I could reach it, someone covered my mouth and dragged me away.
I struggled with all my strength, but the person refused to let go.
In the reflection of the car window, I saw a face–one that bore a striking resemblance to Elara.
“You dare steal my daughter’s mate? You deserve death.”
I waved desperately toward Dean in the distance, silently begging for help.
But he ignored me. After answering a call, he turned and left with two warriors, like nothing had happened.
The woman behind me was incredibly strong–nothing like someone who was supposedly dying from a terminal illness.
When I regained consciousness, I was weak all over. Audrey–Elara’s mother–lay pale and lifeless in a pool of blood beside me.
Before I could make sense of what had happened, Jonah barged in with a group of men, kicking the door open.
Elara let out a piercing scream the moment she saw her mother’s condition:
“Mom! What happened?!”
She clung tightly to her mother and screamed at me through her tears,
“Rebecca, how could you? She was already dying!”
Jonah had a fear of blood. He couldn’t even bring himself to look at the scene.
Still, he managed to call an ambulance–while slamming a harsh kick right into my chest, “Rebecca, I’m so disappointed in you!”
As he was about to call the werewolf police, Elara rushed over and stopped him, sobbing uncontrollably.
“Jonah, please don’t… It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have asked you for help. I just want my mom to be okay…”
Furious, Jonah turned to Dean and snapped,
“I told you to keep an eye on her! How the hell did this happen?”
The three men who had disappeared when I needed them most all spoke at once.
“Alpha Jonah, Lu–Rebecca was driving too fast. We couldn’t keep up…”
Jonah believed them–after all, I’d been a notorious speed demon before mating.
Fighting through his disgust, he knelt down beside Elara and tried to comfort her while she sobbed on the verge of passing out. Chapter 4

“Elara, your mom is going to be okay. I promise.”
The woman lying “unconscious” on the ground trembled slightly but didn’t dare open her eyes.
Swallowing the blood in my throat, I spoke coldly,
“Quit the mourning act. If you keep crying, your mom won’t be able to finish her performance.”
Elara, infuriated, picked up the bloodstained silver dagger and lunged at me.
“I’m surrendering him to you! Isn’t that enough? First you attack my dying mother, now you try to blame her? Where’s your humanity?”
Jonah grabbed the blade with his bare hand, and blood began to drip steadily through his fingers.
