Chapter 14
“What? Are you saying that Ruby set you up to be kidnapped by traffickers?” Laura gasped, cutting Adora off, her face filled with
disbelief.
“Yes. I heard it straight from the traffickers on the way. That night, they grabbed the wrong person at first–they took Ruby.
“I fought with the driver to save her, and in the end, I was the one who got thrown into the lion’s den instead,” Adora said with a
bitter laugh, full of self–mockery.
“Fate is cruel. I’ve regretted it countless times over the past three years. Why did I save her that night? I was such a fool.”
Just thinking about how Ruby had probably been laughing at her for three years made fury burn in Adora’s chest.
Laura trembled with anger.
“You didn’t expose her when you came back? She was just an orphan the Matthews family adopted. She should be grateful for
even stepping foot into your house!
“You treated her like your own sister, protected her, and yet she repaid you like this? She’s worse than an animal!”
Adora remained calm, her smile still tinged with that quiet sorrow.
“I wanted to expose her, but she always plays the victim, making everyone pity her. My family completely took her side.”
She sighed, pausing for a moment before continuing, “On top of that, they all thought I had been trafficked for three years, had a
child with some old man, and even contracted HIV.
“They rejected me from the bottom of their hearts, so of course, they felt even sorrier for Ruby.
“If they had to choose between the two of us, they’d pick her without hesitation. So, what if I’m their biological daughter? This is
human nature–cruel and unforgiving.”
Laura couldn’t even keep driving.
She pulled the car over to the side of the road, turned to her best friend, and said, “Adora, I don’t care about any of that. I really
don’t. If you ever feel like you need someone to talk to, I’m here.”
“Alright.” Adora curled her lips into a beautiful smile, then suddenly remembered something.
“Oh, by the way, don’t worry. I don’t have HIV, and I never had a child.”
“Really? That’s amazing!”
Laura’s eyes widened in shock before lighting up with joy.
Adora looked at her, puzzled. “You don’t doubt me?”
“Why would I?” Laura’s eyes shone with certainty. “I believe everything you say.”

Adora nodded, feeling a warmth in her heart.

“I went to the hospital yesterday for a full checkup–there’s no infection. But I was chained up in a pigsty for three years, starved
constantly, and suffered severe malnutrition.
“I also developed some skin conditions. And… I stink. I’m sorry you have to put up with it,” she said, letting out an embarrassed
chuckle.
Hearing everything Adora had gone through, Laura’s eyes instantly turned red with tears.
“Stop, I can’t take it anymore–it breaks my heart. What smell? I don’t notice anything. All that matters is that you’re alive and
back. I’m so happy!”
Adora looked at her best friend, and tears welled up in her own eyes.
Fate hadn’t been completely cruel to her.
At least, it had left her with one last precious friendship.
When she found out that Laura had been heavily ostracized by her family and was struggling even to afford living expenses while
pursuing her graduate studies, Adora felt a surge of anger.
“Laura, don’t worry. Once I recover, we’ll start something together. You won’t have to endure their attitude or depend on them
anymore.”
Laura sighed. “What can two girls like us even do?”
“You passed the bar exam back in your senior year, didn’t you? With your abilities, you’ll definitely be an outstanding lawyer in
the future. I’ll invest in a law firm, and you’ll be the boss.”
Adora said it with absolute confidence.
Laura’s jaw nearly dropped. “Adora, are you joking?”
“I’m not. What I need to do is difficult–I’ll need my own independent legal team to make it happen. I wouldn’t trust anyone else
with this, but if it’s you, I won’t have to worry.”
Adora had been thinking carefully over the past few days.
She was going to send Ruby to prison.
Not just that–she wanted to take down the entire human trafficking ring behind it!
Even if it cost her everything, she would fight for justice.
t was not just for herself, but for the countless women and children who had been trafficked.
But having money wasn’t enough.
Che didn’t understand the law.

Last night, she had been agonizing over this problem.
She hadn’t expected her best friend to show up at just the right moment.
“Alright, Adora. Whatever you need me to do, I’ll do it. As long as it makes you
happy.”
