Smiling, I picked up Adrian’s phone. Then, I accepted the call and put the phone to his ear.
Faint cries from Katelyn could be heard from the other end of the line.
Adrian instantly grabbed the phone from my hand.
“I’ll be right there,” he said.
I was left standing on the balcony as he walked a few steps away. Then, as if remembering something, he turned back and explained, “It’s an emergency. Katelyn had a miscarriage.”
“Alright,” I replied indifferently.
His gaze lingered on my face for a moment, but then he turned and hurried toward Katelyn.
“Are
you coming back later?” I asked.
His hand paused on the doorknob, and without turning his head, he said, “Yes.”
I packed the last of my things and placed the suitcase beside the couch. Then, I took a seat
and waited for Adrian to return home.
Although this relationship never had a proper beginning, it should have a proper ending.
However, instead of seeing Adrian, I saw an Instagram post from Katelyn.
She had taken a picture of the night sky, and Adrian’s silhouette was unmistakably familiar under the moonlight.
Her caption read, “I don’t want the baby anymore, and I’m saying goodbye to the past. I will no longer chase the moon, for the person that truly matters the most is the one before me.”
Adrian had liked the post.
I laughed bitterly. The love I had spent three years painstakingly building couldn’t compare to a single glance from the woman he truly cared about.
I also liked the post. Then, I unfollowed Katelyn.
Dragging my suitcase, I walked out of the place I had once called home for the past three
years.
I booked a hotel near the airport and waited to fly out the next evening.

Celeste came to meet me one last time. We took a photo in front of the bar where we often drank together in the past.
Then, I posted it on Instagram with the caption, “Off I go!”
Not long after, Adrian commented, “Where are you going?”
I replied, “To a place full of life.”
“Come back soon.”
I paused, then smiled and replied, “Okay.”
It was the kindest of well–wishes.
Some colleagues were supposed to meet me one last time, but they were tied up with surgeries.
Since I wasn’t leaving until the next day, I went back to the hospital to see them one last time.
As soon as I entered the hospital, I overheard my colleagues talking.
“The One and Only diamond ring? Is Dr. Randall proposing?”
I walked over and, sure enough, saw the diamond ring on Adrian’s desk.
“What are you doing here?” Adrian saw me and frowned slightly. “I thought that you were heading off on a vacation.”
Seeing the guarded expression on his face, I remembered that Katelyn had just started showing signs of improvement.
He quickly grabbed the ring box and shoved it into his pocket as if he was worried I would see it.
“I need to check on Katelyn. I’ll talk to you later.”
He turned and left, his hurried steps something I recognized. They reminded me of the way Dad had rushed toward Mom in the proposal video, unable to wait to slip the ring on her finger.
“Ugh, the couple I shipped just fell apart. I thought that Dr. Randall would propose to Dr. Gilmore in the end.”
A colleague sighed. “Yeah. It turns out that Dr. Randall’s heart belongs to that patient.”

Someone else joked, “He hasn’t proposed yet, so how do you know that he isn’t planning to propose to Dr. Gilmore?”
“Come on. Dr. Gilmore’s flying to Solaria tomorrow. How can Dr. Randall propose to her?”
A loud clatter sounded. It was the sound of the ring box hitting the floor.
I turned to see Adrian standing in the doorway. It seemed like he hadn’t left at all.
I picked up the ring box and handed it back to him. “How could you drop something so important?”
He looked at me. “What were they talking about?”
“Oh, I’m just heading somewhere to carry out a small mission. It’s no big deal.”
“Small?” A colleague’s eyes widened. “Dr. Gilmore, you’re talking about Solaria’s Borderless Medical Assistance Program and calling it a ‘small mission‘?”
“Solaria?” Adrian grabbed my arm, causing me to almost drop the ring box.
