“Stop talking nonsense. We’re just colleagues,” I said.

“Would a colleague stay by your side all night if you fainted? It’s not like we weren’t there to

witness it.”

“You misunderstood. We’re just good partners. If one person collapses, it’s normal for the

other to care.”

My colleagues gave me skeptical looks.

“Well, he didn’t even sleep a wink the whole night. You should’ve seen the way Dr. Randall looked at you when you passed out.”

I smiled but had no response to offer. They probably hadn’t seen how Adrian looked at Katelyn when anything bad happened to her.

I insisted, “You guys have really gotten it all wrong. He and I are just close colleagues.”

“Is that so? Why don’t you look behind you then?”

I turned around.

Adrian was sitting at the single table by the window in his usual attire. The ice cubes in his drink had already melted, and water droplets ran down the side of the glass, dampening the surrounding surface. Yet, his hand remained resting on the glass.

“He sat there shortly after we arrived and hadn’t taken a single sip of his drink. Admit it, Dr. Gilmore. He’s definitely pursuing you, isn’t he? Or could it be that you two are already in a relationship?

“Oh, don’t be shy. We won’t tell anyone.”

I stared dazedly at Adrian. I had always been the one to quietly follow him when he went to see Katelyn. I was always worried they would cross a line, so I’d follow him like a stalker. When I saw that they hadn’t done anything inappropriate but were simply laughing and talking, a mix of emotions flooded over me.

“Dr. Randall.” I approached him. “Are you looking for someone?”

He looked up, and the look in his eyes startled me. I never knew they could actually turn red

like this.

“Dr. Gilmore, we’ll head off first.” My colleagues hurriedly waved goodbye without waiting for

me to respond and dashed off, leaving me alone with Adrian.

“Let’s go home.” He stood up and draped his jacket over my shoulders. “The weather’s getting

colder. Put this on.”

Once I got home, I headed straight for the bathroom without saying anything to him.

After washing off the scent of alcohol, I emerged and saw Adrian standing on the balcony. Several cigarette butts had already fallen at his feet.

In the haze of smoke, the glow from his cigarette flickered against his sharp features, and his beautiful almond eyes were tinged with a faint red.

I was stunned. “Why are you smoking?”

Adrian didn’t smoke, and he didn’t drink either.

He threw a stack of papers on the table.

I picked them up. It was the paperwork documenting my miscarriage.

I didn’t say anything. He, too, remained silently smoking. In the end, he was the one who spoke first.

“Was it that time?” he asked hoarsely.

“Yeah.”

His breathing became slightly ragged. He tossed the cigarette butt onto the ground and stamped it out.

“If I hadn’t gone to find Celeste, were you planning to keep this from me forever?”

I glanced at the medicine box I had thrown in the trash last time.

“I thought you knew. If I told you, you’d definitely blame me.”

you

“Why would I blame you?” He grabbed both of my shoulders. “If I hadn’t asked, would have just never said anything about it? The day after your miscarriage, you acted like nothing happened and went back to work, doing surgeries.

“If I hadn’t come looking for you, would you have just kept pushing through on your own? Do you even still consider me your boyfriend?”

I was a bit confused. “Dr. Randall, didn’t you say that you were first and foremost a doctor?”

The force of the hand clutching my shoulder increased. “But it doesn’t mean I should forget my girlfriend.”

His breathing quivered slightly. It was the first time I had seen him struggle to maintain control.

The evening breeze dispersed the smell of the smoke.

I sighed and said, “But we-”

Adrian’s phone suddenly rang, and the familiar contact name appeared on the screen. He instinctively let go of my hand. But then, he paused and glanced at me.
