Chapter 30
“What will be, will be.“]
Hearing the familiar term, Jasper mumbled around the candy in his mouth, “Daddy!” []
I felt that Jasper had a knack for being inappropriately cooperative at times–like now. Would it kill him to quietly eat his candy? [
After Matthew went to prison, Jasper had once asked me where his real dad was. I could only tell him that his father had passed away. []
As a result, Jasper became exceptionally sensitive to the word “passed away.” []
Adrian was visibly stunned, staring at Jasper and me with a complicated expression. []
After finishing his candy, Jasper, with his chubby face, rubbed against my cheek, his eyelids drooping, “Mommy, sleepy.”
I quickly got up, soothingly patting Jasper’s back as I coaxed him. “Sleep now. Let’s go home.” [
“Okay.” Jasper nestled against Su An’s shoulder, letting out a milky yawn. []
I carried Jasper home to sleep.
Once Jasper was soundly asleep, I headed upstairs again and knocked on Adrian’s door.
Adrian opened it, his expression serious as he greeted me blandly, “Here to visit your late ‘true love‘?”
I shut the door with a sharp clap, smirking coldly. “True love? Who, you?” []
“It’s late.
*_* I crossed my arms, leaning against the doorframe. “How’s Mr. Lancaster’s consideration of the matter I mentioned last time?” []
Fresh from a shower, Adrian was dressed in a black V–neck shirt with soft fabric, paired with casual black trousers. His damp black hair added an unintentional allure.
“What matter?” Adrian leaned his arm against the doorframe where I rested, bending slightly. The deeper neckline revealed his well–defined chest.
“About seeing a neurologist for your issues.”
“I’m sick–will you treat me?”
I leaned slightly toward Adrian, resting my left hand lightly on his shoulder. My lips, bare of makeup, curved into a subtle smile as my warm breath brushed against his collarbone.
The arm Adrian had rested above me shifted slightly, his fingers gliding along the textured wallpaper until they stopped at the light switch beside me.
I glanced at Adrian’s wrist near my shoulder, and my fingers followed suit.
Tracing along his strong shoulder line, I let my fingers travel down from his finely etched collarbone to the muscular chest exposed by his V–neck before stopping
“And how does Mr. Lancaster suggest we treat it?” I asked softly, my cool fingers warming as they lingered on Adrian’s chest.
Adrian flipped off the light.
The room was plunged into darkness.
For a moment, I couldn’t adjust and closed my eyes. []
“Dr. Montgomery, what’s your professional recommendation?” Adrian’s voice deepened, rough with emotion. []
I withdrew my hand, my tone turning cold. “Mr. Lancaster is terminal. My suggestion? Scrap it and start over.”
Terminal, beyond saving, not worth trying–just wait for the end.
With that, I ducked under Adrian’s arm and slipped out of his hold. Opening the door, I slammed it shut in his face once more.
Back downstairs, I leaned against the door, calming my slightly racing heart. [
He was upstairs, and I was down.
How pitiful for Adrian, really, stuck in such a small place just to keep an eye on me. I
1 switched on the living room lights and took in the décor, my eyelid twinching fiercely. D
Adrian, meticulous and calculating left no loose ends. He’d easily maneuvered me right under his watchful eye, and the worst part was–Id willingly walked
That night, my sleep was restless, filled with fleeting images of my interactions with Adrian
The next morning, after coaxing jasper through breakfast, I changed into fresh clothes and picked up my phone to return a message a dient had sent me moments before. 0
As 1 exited the elevator, I called the client, who answered by tearing into me immediately. [
Ms. Montgomery, correct? Your company designed our home, but do you think that once you hand in the design, you can wash your hands of it? Letting those contractors cut corners and think we wouldn’t notice–are you kidding me?
The client’s tone grew harsher with every word. [
Let me tell you something–don’t think we’re completely dueless. The materials you sent us are way overpriced compared to market rates. This is frand! You’re so young and already pulling shady tricks–how did your parents raise you?”
Mr. Smith, I’ll head over immediately. Let’s discuss everything in person, and I promise you a satisfactory resolution.” [
Mr.
Hearing my assurance the dient begrudgingly hung up.
In a rush. I jogged out of the lobby in heels. The low three–step staircase out front caught me off guard, and I misstepped, pitching forward
In that moment of darity, I looked around. No handrails in sight.
Well, this was it. Time to die. No saving me now.
But before I could hit the ground, someone grabbed my arm, yanking me back with force. I fell into a familiar embrace, surrounded by a masculine scent that enveloped me completely. []
