She wondered where he went and realized he might have gone to her apartment.

So she went into the building, only to met Vince at the bottom of the stairs. But she didn’t dare to look into his eyes and just turned her face away.
“Why do you come so early?” She asked.
“I had wanted to talk to you last night after the business was seuled. But it was so late and I saw your lights go off. I couldn’t disturb you so late. So 1 stayed in my car downstairs until this morning” Vince explained.
Only them did Amelia found his eyes bloodshot with black circles, and his expression was weary.
She was touched, “You should go back and sleep.
“But I want to see you first. He insisted.
Suddenly, the phone ring stopped their conversation.
Vince’s countenance turned sullen. He declined in but it just kept buzzing, one after another phone coming in.
He had no choice but to walk to the side and answer it. When he hung it up, his countenance was most livid.
Then he realized Amelia was beside him.
He relaxed his knitted eyebrows with his finger, his voice cold. “Sierra made big trouble again. I have to solve it. I’m very sorry. I’ll contact you after everything is seuled.”
“Okay.”
Amelia just nodded. She did not mention the cursory gentle kiss, nor did she question him if the online gossip between him and Sierra was true, for she thought they would never have anything to do with each other any more
After all, there was so wide a disparity between them.
Evelyn had a private room on the 13th floor of the hospital
When Amelia got there, she heard Evelyn talking with someone cheerfully through the closed door. It had been a long time since the last time Evelyn laughed so happily.
But the sound stopped the moment she pushed the door open.
There was a man in his fifties standing beside Evelyn’s sickbed, who immediately put on his hat and mask hastily upon seeing Amelia.
Before she could ask who this man was, he had strode away in no moment with his head deep down.
It was very suspicious. Amelia couldn’t help but ask, “Who’s that, Mom!”
Evelyn averted her eye contact. She smiled and turned to the window, “Just an old friend of mine. You never met him before.”
“Why should he flee in a hurry without even saying goodbye?” Amelia pursued.
“It’s nothing big. He’s just a little shy. We’ve been friends for many years. Don’t be so suspicious”
“Alright”
Amelia stopped asking
She was happy than this man was close with Evelyn.
Amelia lost her father in a car accident when she was ten. Since that, Evelyn never took another man’s hand into marriage, nor did she even date, though she was pretty, alle, and never short of wooers. With a strong personality, she managed to bring her daughter up alone.
Amelia had always felt sorry. She thought had it not been for her, Evelyn would have had started a new relationship. Now that Evelyn was close with
mun, she was glad.
She and Evelyn talked for a while until it was dusk.

Then she bade goodbye and walked out. As she closed the door, she found there was a shred of cloth with red within on the ground.
Out of curiosity, she picked it up and unfolded it.
There some scarlet letters were seen, which read, [AN EYE FOR AN EYE A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.] The hue was so fresh that it was almost blazing.
