Chapter 16
Chapter 16
Josie and Violet didn’t continue talking about the former’s condition.
Josie changed the topic. “Have you and Hansel gotten engaged?”
“Yes, we have.” Violet waved her hand at her mother, showing her the huge diamond on her finger. “This is the engagement ring he gave me. It’s worth 200 million dollars.”
Josie was relieved. She gently touched the diamond. “Violet, if you hadn’t noticed that Hansel had started falling for Elara and drove a wedge between them, that fool would’ve been the one wearing this ring now.”
I was stunned. What had Violet done to drive a wedge between Hansel and me?
Jealousy shone in Violet’s eyes, but her words were scornful. “Hansel hated her. There was no way he’d fall for her. All I did was help him make up his mind and cut to the chase.
“Mom, you weren’t there to see how pitiful Elara was when she was mocked on the yacht. She was so pathetic. It was hilarious, especially when Hansel tossed the imported pills she bought for him on the floor one by one. The dejected look on her face gave me so much joy.
“He even told her to get out of his sight, like how he discarded those pills.”
As she spoke, she couldn’t hold in her laughter.
Josie looked delighted, too. “She slept with other men to afford those pills, after all. Naturally, Hansel would find those pills disgusting and throw them away, insulting her as he did. Even if Hansel didn’t have any feelings for her, he wouldn’t want to be cuckolded.
“I just didn’t expect him to believe those photos so easily without investigating whether they were real. I guess he/ was really just toying around with her. Even if you hadn’t taken those photos, he’d have dumped that fool after he got bored with her.”
I was astounded by what I had heard.
It was no wonder Hansel discarded the pills I bought just like that and even told me to get lost so condescendingly. It turned out that he thought I slept with other men so that could afford those pills.
But I earned that money by juggling several jobs at once and selling my blood at the hospital. There was nothing dirty about that money.
Now it made sense why Violet had said on the phone that I sold myself out of desperation when I called Hansel for help on the day I was murdered. She had forged photos of me sleeping with other men just so Hansel would misunderstand that I’d been cheating on him.
That was likely what she had just tried to say about how I had hurt Hansel before he cut her off and forbade her from mentioning it again.
That vile woman was indeed scheming against me behind my back.
But since those photos were fake, how could Hansel have just taken them at face value?
We had been intimate before. Even if Violet had found someone who resembled me to pretend to be me in those photos, he would’ve realized that it wasn’t me if he’d actually cared.
But he didn’t care.
As Josie said, he was only toying around with me, so he didn’t even bother to question the authenticity of the photos and believed what he saw. He didn’t even ask me about it.

Chapter 16
Keeping it to himself, he sided with Violet and backstabbed me.
From the moment he told me he wanted to propose to me, I had already fallen into their trap.
He wanted to insult me publicly so I would become the laughingstock of the entire city.
But why would he, an influential figure with a net worth of hundreds of billions of dollars, play games with my feelings? I was a mere nobody from the bottom class of society.
That was the one thing I could never understand.
Just then, Violet smirked. “Hansel’s not just toying around with Elara.”
Josie was dazed. “Then what is he up
to?”
There was a pause before Violet answered in a soft yet chilly tone. “He’s exacting revenge on her!”
Josie was shocked. “Just because of those fake photos?”
“Of course not.” Violet leaned in closer and whispered into her ear.
Josie looked much more at ease after listening to her. She appeared to be gleeful. “So, even until she died, that
fool never knew why Hansel held a grudge against her. How pitiful.”
