Chapter 13
It was several hours later when I returned to Hansel’s side. He was standing before the floor–to–ceiling window in his office. Being tall, sturdy, and outstandingly elegant, he exuded an innate authoritative air.
Previously, when I hadn’t discovered his identity, I used to feel sorry for him. I thought that the gods must’ve been envious of his perfect looks and decided to make him poor. Otherwise, his life would’ve just been perfect.
Now, I knew how ridiculous my assumption was.
He was the chosen one. He owned everything everyone else could only wish to have.
However, he was heartless!
I stared at his silhouette coldly as I floated toward him.
I didn’t know why my ghost had to return to him. It was as though an invisible force bound me to him.
Hansel couldn’t sense my presence at all. His head hung as he looked at something in his hands.
As I took a glance, my heart clenched.
He was staring at the blessed pendant I gifted him!
Back then, he had lied to me, saying that he had a kidney disease. Believing in him, I had gone to a church and got him a blessed pendant for good health.
The pendant was gold, which cost me 2,000 dollars at that time. It was everything I had. However, to someone of Hansel’s stature, it was a cheap and worthless trinket.
Still, he had been delighted to receive it. He had even pulled me into an embrace and kissed me passionately, telling me the sweetest words. “Lara, I’ll be nice to you as long as I live.”
When he said that, he had appeared to be sincere. There had been no signs of pretense on his expression.
Naturally, someone as naive as me took it seriously. I had said to him, “Hansel, I hope you’re not lying.”
“Of course I’m not,” he answered without the slightest hint of hesitation. “My heart belongs only to you.”
I had been filled with bliss. As I leaned against his chest, with my cheek pressed against where his heart was, I listened to its steady beat. I teased, “Hansel, if you lie to me, I’ll snatch your heart from you!”
“Sure.” He hugged me, putting on the most perfect act. “If I lie to you, I’ll wrench my heart out and give it to you.”
He had sounded so solemn. I was moved to tears, losing all reason amid his impeccable acting and passionate
kisses.
That was the day I gave myself up to him.
I had felt immense pleasure at the thought of finally becoming his. I thought I could spend the rest of my life with him and foolishly poured all my love into him.
Ultimately, all I got in return was him belittling and being scornful of my genuine feelings.
He ended up lying to me. However, he didn’t give me his heart as he had sworn to.
He was still alive and kicking, while my body was left out in the wild, forgotten by the world.
Still, since he’d been so indifferent about my disappearance, why would he still gaze at my gift to him when he was alone?

Chapter 13
Was he reminded of me when he saw it, or had he finally started worrying about me?
No! I quickly tossed that thought out of my mind.
He had turned a blind eye to how desperate Mom had been and her putting up posters of me. He even said I was like a bad penny who’d always turn up. Would someone as merciless as him even worry over my disappearance?
Disappointment washed over me. I abruptly reached out to snatch the pendant from him.
A liar like him didn’t deserve something so beautiful!
However, my hand passed right through his. I couldn’t pick up the pendant at all.
Suddenly, he curled his fingers around the pendant firmly. Looking up at the blue sky, he let out a breath. He then muttered to himself, “You can’t be dead!”
