Chapter 15
Emily’s voice was soft and filled with sorrow, making anyone who saw her feel a pang of sympathy.
The cold wind blew, messing up her long hair. She shivered and tightened her arms around Alex.
Alex frowned. He had known Emily for a long time, but she had been studying abroad in the past few years, and they had only kept in touch through phone calls.
“Let’s go inside, it’s freezing out here, Alex said in his deep voice.
In the shadows, his expression was hard to read.
Emily murmured in response, letting go of him but still holding his hand.
“Alex, I’m so glad you came,” she said, her tone relaxed, like someone who had narrowly escaped death and was now reunited with loved ones.
As they entered the living room, Brad came downstairs, waiting for them.
Seeing Alex, he gave a bright smile, flattering and respectful.
After all, Alex was the head of the Lavien family, whose power and status were unmatched in the country, far surpassing the Orsini family.
If his daughter Emily could marry up to the Lavien family, it would be a huge boost for the Orsini family.
The position of Mrs. Lavien would be better suited for Emily than for the ungrateful Harper.
Harper had never treated him as her father.
She had been married to the Lavien family for five years, solely focused on currying favor with Alex, and had never brought any benefit to the Orsini family.
Emily was different. He had always doted on Emily, and she was close to him. Weighing the pros and cons, he naturally planned to rely on Emily in the future.
Brad greeted obsequiously, “Alex, please sit down. I’ll get you some tea.”
Alex ignored him, not even glancing at him.
Emily pulled Alex to sit on the sofa and instructed Brad, “Dad, Alex likes black tea. Make sure to bring the best one.”
She always kept Alex’s preferences in mind.
Brad nodded repeatedly and left.
The house was warm.
Only then did Alex notice that Emily was only wearing a thin nightgown, exposing her smooth calves.
As if thinking of something, he frowned slightly.
“What happened at that time?” Alex asked in a flat tone.
Upon mentioning this, Emily’s eyes reddened again.
“I couldn’t get a taxi, so I decided to walk to the intersection to see if there were any cabs,” she sniffled, tears streaming down her face.
Alex’s frown deepened, “And then?”
Wiping away her tears, Emily looked at him pitifully and continued. “Then, a few thugs appeared out of nowhere and started harassing me. I was terrified and said I would call the police. Just then, a taxi arrived, and they ran away in a panic.”
Alex remained silent. After a moment, he spoke, “Report it to the police and have them check the surveillance.”
Since it had happened, it needed to be investigated.
Emily was stunned for a moment. Under the light, her face looked a bit unnatural.

“Alex, that won’t be necessary. After all, they didn’t do anything to me.”
At this moment, Brad came out with the black tea.
He carefully placed the tea in front of Alex, ‘Alex, please have some tea first.”
Alex’s expression was cold, not even looking at the tea.
‘I’m calling the police now,” Alex said, picking up his phone, ready to make a call.
For a company like the Lavien Group, they had connections with not just the police but also high–ranking officials. A word from Alex would ensure a thorough investigation.
Brad tried to smooth things over with a smile. “Forget it, Alex. I had someone check it out, and they said the surveillance on that road was broken, so nothing could be found.”
Emily quickly chimed in, “Yeah, Alex, let’s just drop it. They didn’t actually do anything to me.”
She pouted, her eyes filled with affection as she looked at Alex, her voice sweet. “This whole thing is Harper’s fault. If she hadn’t kept asking me to leave, I wouldn’t have run into those thugs.”
Brad nodded, his voice filled with resentment. “Harper is too cold–hearted. She’s always scheming, while Emily is pure. This incident is probably not that simple; it must have been Harper’s plan!”
Emily’s eyes widened in surprise, covering her mouth with one hand as if she had just realized something. *Dad, do you mean Harper hired those thugs to humiliate me? Why would she do that? Just because Alex wants to marry me?”
It seemed like their speculations had already confirmed Harper’s involvement.
They had made their point clear, and Alex naturally understood their implication.
Alex’s face was stern, his tone calm. “Harper is not that kind of person. Don’t make wild guesses. I will look into this issue.”
Emily’s expression stiffened for a moment. Was Alex defending Harper?
Her eyes reddened with grievance. “Alex, did I say something wrong?”
Alex’s gaze was firm. “I’ve been with her for so many years. I know her well.”
Emily felt a chill in her heart. Could it be that Alex had developed feelings for Harper during their five years of living together?
If she hadn’t been forced to go abroad back then, she wouldn’t have given Harper the chance.
Thinking of this, she felt a surge of hatred.
But even if she was unwilling, Emily still smiled and followed Alex’s words. “Alex, you’re right. Since Harper isn’t that kind of person, it must have been an accident.”
She raised her head and asked in a cloying tone. “Alex, can you stay here tonight? I’m a bit scared.”
“Yeah, stay here. It’s so late already,” Brad chimed in, hoping Emily could seduce Alex into something.
Thinking of Harper’s previous resistance, Alex’s eyes darkened, and he nodded slightly.
Seeing his agreement, Emily immediately smiled brightly. “I’ll help you prepare the room.”
The next day.
Holden woke up early and specifically instructed Ron to prepare Harper’s favorite breakfast.
Not long after, noticing that Harper caine downstairs alone, Holden’s heart sank, and his face turped grim. “Harper, where’s Alex?”
Harper was unemotional. He left after receiving Emily’s call last night.”
Holden was furious. ‘Alex is driving me mad. When he comes back, I’ll give him a good lesson.”
Harper pretended to be unconcerned and smiled lightly. Grandpa, anger is not good for your health. I’m fine. Don’t worry.”

She saw the breakfast on the table and quickly changed the subject. “Great, I haven’t had Ron’s breakfast in a long time.”
Seeing Harper’s forced smile, Holden sighed and said nothing more.
After breakfast, Harper said goodbye to Holden and went to work.
As soon as she entered the office, she saw Caden already sitting there.
