He dialed my number, but no one picked up. He couldn’t believe that I’d divorce him without him knowing.
The burnt smell led him to the backyard, where our wedding photos lay in smoldering ruins. Among the ashes, a single unscorched fragment remained–one of my bright, unblinking eyes staring back at him.
He fell to the ground helplessly. His chest rose and fell violently from his heavy breathing.
Hansel called his assistant, who immediately shared with him my recent schedule and flight information.
He decided to book the next flight to Blumland on the spot.
Before boarding his flight, he dropped by the hospital and barged into the director’s office to confront Colin.
“Where’s Melissa Colby? Where did she go? What was the conversation about seeking treatment abroad?”
Colin leisurely took a sip of water before explaining, “We weren’t talking about you. Melissa is the patient who will be receiving
treatment abroad.”
Colin handed over my thick file of patient records. Hansel felt like he had been struck by lightning. His voice began to tremble.
“T–That’s impossible. How could Mel have depression? She looked happy every day…”
I had happily told him stories and made him breakfast. I wore a bright smile every day.
Hansel flung my patient records onto the floor.
He snapped, “Tell me, where is she now? Does she think faking her illness will work? She won’t get my attention, even if she
leaves
home!”

Colin chuckled softly, but it was a sarcastic smile.
“Hansel Saddler, aren’t you the one who’s faking your symptoms? Since you can’t make sense of Melissa’s patient records, let me walk you through it.
“She suffered from severe depression after her miscarriage five years ago. Have you noticed the scars on her wrist and her neck? Do you have any idea how much suffering she’s been through?
“However, she refused to be warded because she needed to look after you. Every smile she put on for you hurt her more.
“I’m more surprised that you faked your depression. I really feel sorry for Melissa. She’s getting treated abroad. I’d advise you not to harass her, unless you want her to die.”
Colin’s harsh words drove a knife into Hansel’s heart.
Hansel stood there, frozen and speechless. He nearly could not breathe from the heartbreak.
Memories of my lifeless eyes flashed across his mind.
He wondered, “When did Mel lose her spark?”
After what felt like an eternity, he finally croaked, “Will she get better? How long will that take?”
“Maybe. Maybe not. Her recovery might take anywhere from one to ten years. Regardless, your presence is toxic for her.”
Hansel couldn’t remember how he wandered out of Colin’s office. He looked like a zombie. There was a vacant look in his eyes.
Giselle was startled by his appearance. She grabbed him and cooed, “Hansel, where did you go? The baby and I missed you so
much.”
But he did not seem to hear her at all. He ruthlessly shook her off, ignoring her as she flailed and wailed on the ground. He
showed no reaction whatsoever.
When he got back to the villa, he couldn’t make himself step inside. Without me, the villa had become a lifeless and cold place. He sat motionless at the door, as if waiting for someone to return, the same way I had waited for his return at the door, late at night, over these years.
“Sir, you have a delivery. A Ms. Melissa Colby instructed us to deliver it personally to you.”
Upon hearing my name, Hansel immediately unwrapped the parcel with shaky hands.
The box contained only a few photos. Those photos captured Giselle in a deal with some middle–aged man. She had handed the man a bank card that she had received from Hansel.

Chapter 9.
Hansel’s expression took a grim turn. Before he knew it, he had poked a hole through the photos due to his strong grip.
He immediately recognized the middle–aged man as the driver responsible for the car accident that led to my miscarriage.
Three days later, Giselle was pleading with Hansel at the underground parking lot. She was tugging at his clothes with tears in her
eyes.
“Hansel, that wasn’t me! Please believe me.”
The middle–aged man next to her pointed a finger at her. “She’s the one! She paid me a million dollars to run into that lady. She was the mastermind, and I had nothing to do with it—”
“Nonsense!”
Hansel listened to their squabble with a menacing scowl on his face.
He spoke coldly to the man, “So, you were the one who ran over Melissa.”
Later, the middle–aged man was forced to take the driver’s seat. Giselle was left on the road. Her terrified screams pierced the air.
“Hansel, no! You can’t do this! What about our baby?”
Her screams were swallowed by the roar of an approaching truck.
The crash came in an instant. Her body hit the ground, and a trail of blood was left in its wake.
With the last of her strength, she reached toward Hansel. It was a final plea to save their unborn child.
But Hansel did not even glance at her. He merely said, “Call the police.”
Giselle closed her eyes in despair after Hansel walked away from her.
Hansel took a flight to Blumland. Even though Colin warned him that he was toxic for me, he wanted to be my antidote this time.
He realized he could not afford to lose me.
