When Laura started yelling, she had lost her composure, and she was so loud that the doctor outside the ward came in with a scowl and warned her, “You’re in a hospital, not the market! Quiet!”
I, too, gave Laura a “puzzled” look. “What’s wrong, Laura? Do William and my dad have to listen to the record?”
At this point, Laura realized that she had slipped and acted too extremely. In panic, she waved her hands. “N–No, that’s not what I meant!”
I continued to stare at her, and she was so anxious that sweat seemed to be beading on her forehead. She kept looking everywhere but at me. Then, she licked her lips and came to hold my hand in a show of affection. “How could you think that, Anya?
“It’s a gift from me to you, and I just want your family to listen to it too. William is a music professor, so he must have a greater understanding of music than we do. I just want him to listen to it so that I know I wasn’t scammed!”
She made it sound so damn logical.
“I see…” I drawled. “So that’s how it is.”
Laura nodded rapidly.
“Sure.” In the end, I said this, and she visibly relaxed.
