A moment later, she scoffed, saying, “Once he knows the truth about you, he’ll see that you’ve been deceiving him all along. You even slept with Jonah on purpose. He’ll definitely never want you anymore.”
I shrugged. “Then, I’ll just deny it. I’ll cry and claim I thought he didn’t want me anymore, so I acted out. Do you think Eric will regret everything and feel sorry for me? Maybe he’ll even treat me better after this.”
Lila stood there, dumbfounded, and stared at me with fear.
“Gina, you’re evil! All that sweet, innocent act of yours was just a façade!”
I couldn’t help but laugh. “And what about you, Lila? Didn’t you befriend me just to get closer to Eric? Can you honestly say you didn’t have ulterior motives?”
She shook her head vehemently. “No! I truly love Eric. You’re the one who’s been pretending—you don’t love him at all!”
“I do love him, but he betrayed my love. He pushed me into Jonah’s arms. I didn’t betray him—he’s the one who made me do this.” I looked at Lila curiously. “You’re so quick to judge me, but it’s not like you’re any better. Weren’t you after Eric because he’s rich? And yet, you call it true love.”
Lila paled before flushing. She pointed at me with a trembling finger. “You’re a horrible woman, Gina.”
I shook my head. “Not as horrible as Eric. He’s the one who pushed his girlfriend into another man’s arms, treating me like some disposable object. Isn’t that worse?
“Lila, Jonah is my boyfriend now, and he’ll stay that way. Whether you can hold on to Eric is on you. I’m not here to compete with you, nor will I sabotage you. So, you can relax.”
Lila stared at me, trembling. “So, you don’t love Eric and Jonah. You just want a rich guy. It doesn’t matter who, as long as he has money!”
I was starting to lose patience. “I loved Eric, but he didn’t cherish that love. So why should I keep loving him? Jonah lied to me too, so I’ll never give him my whole heart. But at least he’s not as bad as Eric. As long as he treats me well, I’ll do the same for him.”
Lila looked doubtful. “What makes you so sure you can keep Jonah wrapped around your finger? After all, he’s far more cunning than Eric.”
“That’s not your problem. If you love Eric, then hold on to him. We both know struggling to get by isn’t a fun way to live, and neither of us wants to go back to that life.”
As I spoke, I turned to leave. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a shadowy figure darting through the trees nearby. But when I looked again, it was gone.
