“Mr. Lancaster, we have no personal feud, yet you call me just to hurl insults? That sounds like verbal abuse to me,” I spoke calmly, but my amusement was obvious.

“I let your little stunt at the wedding slide, but let’s be clear. Those rings were bought with my money. What gives you the right to hand them out without my permission?
“And as for returning it… Well, that ring was mine to begin with. I have every right to take back what belongs to me.”
Julian was clearly taken aback, as if he hadn’t expected me to speak to him this way.
“What do you mean yours and mine? You’re my wife! Your things are my things! I already told Vivi that the ring looks better on
her than it ever did on you. You gave it to her, end of story. 1
“Now, be reasonable and apologize to her, and let’s just forget about all this.”
I let out a sharp laugh. It seemed he had spent the whole day clinging to Vivi, completely unaware that our engagement was already over.
“Listen carefully, Julian Lancaster. Our marriage is canceled. I expect you to return that ring, intact, by tomorrow. Otherwise, I
will report you for theft.”
“Clara, don’t be so unreasonable! Do you really have to make Vivi cry over this?”
Even through the phone, I could hear the frustration in his voice.
“Oh, she’ll be crying over more than that if she doesn’t return what’s mine. She’ll be losing money, too.”
Just as I was about to hang up, something else occurred to me, and I added one last remark, “Oh, and make sure to clean it before
you give it back.”
“Why?” Julian asked, puzzled.
