My face was devoid of any emotion. I closed the lid and handed the box back to the person who delivered it.
“Return it. I can’t accept a gift from Mr. Stevens.”

The door to the dressing room opened. With everyone watching, I took step after step toward Zane. He was clearly overwhelmed. and trying to hold it together, but in the end, he could not stop his tears from falling. During the exchange of rings, he clutched my hand tightly. He refused to let go even for a second.
“Lily, I can’t believe I’m finally marrying you.”
I smiled and nodded. There were tears brimming in my eyes.
With all eyes on us, Zane held my hand as the officiant spoke.
“Miss Lily James, do you take Mr. Zane Stone as your husband, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, for as long as you both shall live?”
“I do.”
“And Mr. Zane Stone…”
“I do!”
Zane’s gaze was unwavering and filled with tenderness. Even in the sea of flowers, his eyes never left me.
“You may now kiss the bride.”
His kiss, as always, was possessive and passionate. As he held me in his arms, out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw a
familiar figure.
The figure was gone in an instant. I did not pay it any mind.
After all, no one waited around forever.
Years passed after the wedding, I never heard anything about Jake again. Through my own efforts, I grew my company into
something remarkable.
I even secured contracts from several countries.
I quickly became a rising star in the business world.
The next time I saw Jake, he had lost a lot of weight. He was still alone.
His business had been struggling lately. Several deals had been falling through. That was when he went out of his way to track me down as he hoped to secure a new contract with me.

I just swirled the wine in my glass and stayed silent for a minute.
“Mr. Stevens, how easily you seem to forget. I wonder if you even remember telling me I’d never amount to anything.”
Jake’s face turned pale. I could not help but feel a wave of strange satisfaction.
So this was what it felt like to be at the top. No wonder they never wanted me to be part of it before.
