Quintus refused to negotiate.
“If you really want a divorce, then sue me. I will never agree to it,” he said.
For someone so prideful, it was surprising how he started waiting for me downstairs every single day after that.
On the first day, he woke up at five in the morning, drove across the city in the dead of night, and stood in line for two hours just
to buy my favorite pastries.
On the second day, he went to a friend’s garden on the outskirts of town late at night and handpicked a bouquet of blooming roses
for me.
On the third day, he brought back the emerald necklace my grandmother had left me, claiming he had gotten it back from
Vanessa after paying her a hefty sum.
On the fourth day, I instructed security not to let him upstairs and refused to accept anything he sent.
After that, he stopped showing up for a while.
I later heard from a friend that after his company’s IPO was delayed, Quintus was summoned by headquarters.
The executives slammed their hands on the table and threw the files in his face. “If you can’t do it, then get out.”
Apparently, when he came out, there was a bruise on his forehead.
Originally, they had promised to promote him to CEO of the Vancouston branch once the company went public.
But now, with his scandal out in the open, not only was his promotion gone, but he might not even get another opportunity for
years.
To salvage what he could, he had to spend a fortune pulling strings.
The company didn’t go public on time, and he didn’t know when he would get back the money he had invested.
Life became tight for him.
Yet, Vanessa decided to break up with him during this low point in his life.
Quintus couldn’t accept it. “I gave up my wife and child for you, and now you want to break up with me?”
Vanessa coldly responded, “Everything you did was your own choice. What does it have to do with me? You told me to follow you for a better life, but now you’re a sinking ship. Why should I stick around?”
The last time I met Quintus to discuss the division of assets, I brought up these rumors.
He looked embarrassed. “There’s nothing much to say, I misjudged her.”

Then, he looked at me with a trace of hope. “Giselle, can we start over?”
“Is my attitude not clear enough?” I asked.
I had given the pastries he brought to the cleaning lady in my building.
The flowers had been picked up by a friend since I was allergic to pollen.
I kept the necklace, but it was mine to begin with.

I smiled. “Quintus, you can never turn back time to fix your regrets. I don’t know what kind of person Vanessa truly is, but you’re
no better either. I hope you’ll agree to the divorce. Let’s end this properly without dragging it into court.”
It was laughable how everything became unsalvageable the moment he finally realized his mistake.
Perhaps my words were too blunt. They hurt his pride.
In the end, Quintus agreed to sign the papers and split the assets evenly.
“I don’t want it,” I said. “You make more than me, so you should take a bigger share. If I ever need money, I can earn it myself since I’m still young.”
“You’re entitled to your share. Don’t be shy,” he added.
I didn’t want to be tangled up with him any more than I had to.
Since he was so firm, I agreed to the terms.
