Chapter 7
Axel instinctively started to backpedal, but then a smirk spread across his face.
“Ember, what new game are you playing now?”
“You think I won’t actually break up with you, is that it?”
“Let me tell you, this push me away so I’ll chase you‘ tactic isn’t going to work on met
My gaze grew even colder.[]
Axel was so confident.[]
And why wouldn’t he be? I’d given him every reason to feel that way.
Every time we fought about Layla, I always ended up compromising because I couldn’t bear to end our relationship.
But he forgot that I compromised because I loved him and loved our baby.[]
I compromised because I wanted a happy family.
Now, the baby was gone, a happy family was impossible, and I no longer loved him.
Why should I keep sacrificing my dignity?
“Think whatever you want. We’re not legally married anyway.“]
“We bought the apartment together and split the renovation costs equally. Make sure you pay me my share.“[]
“You can handle canceling the wedding arrangements yourself. I send you the vendors‘ contact information.“]
As I finished speaking, I noticed Layla’s face light up with satisfaction behind Axel’s back.
But Axel, with his back to her, remained oblivious, still indignantly pressing: “What are you saying? You’re actually breaking up with me over this?“]
“Did you just now figure out what my job is? I simply didn’t want to see someone die, so I helped Layla a bit more than usual!”
“Why do you have to be so aggressive?“]
After berating me further, Axel took a deep breath: “Fine, you lost the baby. Consider it atonement for what you did to Layla. I promise to keep my distance from her from now on, okay?“]
This was actually a concession from Axel.
Despite all our arguments, this was the first time he’d ever offered to distance himself from Layla.
Layla’s smug expression quickly faltered.]
She frowned, about to play the victim agian, but froze when she caught the knowing, half–smiling look on my face.
Chapter?
I spoke slowly. “Axel, you seem to be confused about something, I don’t recycle trash.“[]
“Besides, you’ve mentioned so many times that I owe Layla. I’d really like to know exactly what I did?”
Axel was stunned by my question, then his eyes flashed with coldness.[]
“After we got together, didn’t you investigate Layla?”
“You sent emails to her classmates abroad, encouraging them to bully her, right? If not for you, how would she have developed depression from being harassed?”
“If you ask me, you should be apologizing to Laylar“]
Axel’s voice grew louder, convinced he stood on the side of justice.[]
But Layla looking completely clueless, her whole body tense and uncomfortable.]
Seeing her obvious guilt, I burst into laughter.
“So who told you this? That I sent emails abroad? What could I possibly send that would make her classmates bully her?”
“Axel, I don’t know whether you’re overestimating me or underestimating me!”
Axel hesitated, but quickly remembered something: “I saw your mail records. There was definitely an email sent overseas.“]
Barbara, who had been silent until now, finally spoke up.
She looked at Axel, disappointment filling her eyes: “That was an email 1 asked Ember to send for me. professor at that school, have you forgotten?”
Axel’s face turned pale: “That’s impossible. Mom, why would you contact Aunt through email?“[]
“Don’t you know your aunt only checks her computer for work, nother phone?”
Axe! never expected this to be the truth.[]
He stiffly turned to face Layla, who was visibly flustered now.
Your aunt is a
“Didn’t you tell me not to blame Ember? That you weren’t good enough yourself, making her feel insecure, which is why she acted that way?”
“So you just went along with my assumptions and let me blame Ember? |
Layla couldn’t look him in the eye.[]
Axel grabbed her shoulders: “Answer mer“]]
His grip was so tight that Layla winced in pain, then appeared frightened by him as her eyes reddened.]
“Yes, I misunderstood!“]
“But I never actually said it was Ember who sent those emails…”
THE
As she tried to weasel out of it, Barbara had enough and made an International call to Axel’s aunt to ask about Layla.[]
“Layla? I know that student. She was notorious for dating five or six guys at once–mostly men who were already in relationships. She was quite infamous at the school-
“She was also caught cheating on exams multiple times and eventually got expelled.“]
“Why are you asking about her?“]
