Chapter 28
Ethan struggled for air as he stared into Tessa’s unfocused, tear–filled eyes. A crushing weight pressed against his chest, leaving
him breathless.
“Can’t you see that you’re only making things worse for her?” Zachary yelled.
Ethan whipped around to face him, his voice quiet but steely. “We’re still married. Touch her, and you’ll regret it.”
Without saying another word, he turned and left.
Zachary stepped closer and slipped an arm around Tessa’s shoulders. “It’s okay. He’s gone. You’re safe now.”
She wiped her tears away but said nothing.
Ethan stormed out of the elevator and rushed across the hotel lobby, already dialing a number. “Find out what’s going on with Tessa’s eyes. The hospital claimed that they didn’t have her records, didn’t they? Look into it again!”
After steadying herself, Tessa turned toward Zachary with concern. “You’re hurt, aren’t you? I’m sorry, Zac. This is my fault.”
“Don’t say that. That makes it sound like we’re strangers.”
Blood streaked his face, but the injuries weren’t serious. He was grateful that Tessa couldn’t see anything. She’d only blame herself more if she could.
“Ethan didn’t seem like he’d back down easily, What are you going to do?” Zachary asked.
Tessa hesitated before answering, “I’m definitely divorcing him. But since he’s refusing to sign now, there’s nothing immediate I can do.”
“Then we’ll take him to court. I’ll get you a divorce lawyer,” Zachary suggested.
“Let’s
give it a few more days. If he still won’t agree, we’ll have no choice but to go to court.”
Ethan had hurt her beyond forgiveness. She was determined to end this marriage, whatever the cost.
“Do you want
“Do you want me to take you to the hospital?” Zachary asked softly.
“Just take me home,” Tessa replied, shaking her head.
Tessa had been to the hospital too many times, and each visit ended the same.
Rosalie, who was her attending physician, had repeatedly warned her to have the surgery soon or risk losing her vision entirely. Now it seemed that the outcome had simply come sooner thah anticipated.
As Zachary drove Tessa home, he noticed a black car tailing them. His lips curled in a sneer. Unable to leave her alone, he escorted her upstairs.

“I can’t see. I’m not sure if it’s temporary or permanent,” Tessa said, her laugh hollow. She’d experienced temporary blindness before. It was a horrifying ordeal she never wanted to repeat.
“Come inside!” R
!” Rosalie pulled her in, then gestured to Zachary, “Mr. Ziegler, please join us. What’s going on? How did this happen so suddenly? Was there some kind of trigger?”
Rosalie knew that even with Tessa’s deteriorating condition, sudden blindness shouldn’t have happened so abruptly. So, she figured that something must have triggered it.
After a long pause, Tessa answered in a rough whisper, “I saw Ethan and Charlotte.”
“That wretched pair! I wish they’d vanish from your life forever!” Rosalie spat
“It’s alright. Losing my sight was inevitable. You warned me yourself. This just came sooner than we expected.”
