Chapter 21
David was quiet for a moment before speaking. “The thing is…. I know you’ve made up your mind about divorcing Ethan. But can I ask you for a favor?”
Tessa quickly responded, “David, please don’t say that. If there’s anything you need from me, just say it. I’ll do my best to help you”
David sighed. “I’d like you to accompany Ethan to a birthday party. Would that be alright?”
Outwardly, he’d tried to seem open–minded and told himself that if Tessa wanted a divorce, so be it. But deep down, he still hoped that she and Ethan could reconcile.
Naturally, he now knew that hope was slim at best.
Nevertheless, he wanted to give his disappointing grandson one last chance. He thought that it would be a blessing if Ethan and Tessa could mend things with this final opportunity. And if not, then he’d accept it and say nothing more.
Tessa pondered for a while. She didn’t want to be with Ethan but relented because it was David who was making this request.
“David, don’t worry. I’ll go with him.”
“That’s good.” David was overjoyed. “Thank you, Tess. I’ll let Ethan know and have him pick you up.”
“Alright.”
After the call ended, Tessa felt a heaviness settle in her chest.

However, she figured that it was better to experience a quick pain instead of enduring a long one. This would be the last time.
David’s friend’s birthday party was two days later. Tessa reckoned that David must have already spoken to Ethan because on the day of the event, she received a call from the latter telling her to get ready and wait for him downstairs.
Tessa told him that it wasn’t necessary and she’d take a taxi on her own. She didn’t want Ethan to know where she lived, even if he could easily find out.
However, Ethan didn’t respond and simply hung up.
Tessa knew him well. That silent hang–up was his way of rejecting her defiance. He was used to control and never liked it when people went against him.
When it was time, Tessa changed into a simple dress, put on light makeup, and headed downstairs. Just then, she received a text from Ethan..
“Something came up. Take a taxi and head over yourself.”

Tessa laughed at the message.
She had offered to make her own way earlier, and he’d responded by hanging up on her. Now, something had come up suddenly, and he was telling her to take a taxi anyway.
His sure had a mood swing.
Tessa put her phone away and flagged down a taxi.
The party was held at a five–star hotel. Tessa arrived at exactly six o’clock.
As she stepped into the lobby and headed toward the third floor where the event was held, someone unexpected came walking
down the stairs.
It was Charlotte. She wore a white dress with her hair elegantly pinned up. Her fair skin and delicate makeup gave her a soft, demure appearance.
“Oh, if it isn’t Ms. Langford,” Charlotte said in mock surprise. “What are you doing here?”
Tessa glanced at her expressionlessly. But the moment she saw Charlotte’s sparkling eyes, all she could think of was the corneas. that had been taken from her.
She clenched her fists tightly, her jaw locking as she fought to keep her anger in check. She didn’t want to engage, so she walked past Charlotte without saying a single word.
But then, Charlotte said, “Do you know why your corneas were taken?”
Tessa froze in her tracks. “So you admit it,” she said in a low voice. “You stole the cornea donation that was meant for me.”
Charlotte chuckled. “Let me correct you. I didn’t steal it. Ethan did. And I never told him to do.
