Chapter 20
There was a newfound resolve in Tessa’s eyes as she spoke. With that, she turned and walked away.
Ethan had an awful look on his face. He couldn’t believe that she would bring this matter to court. He strode forward and grabbed her arm. “Where are you going?”
“Why do you care?” Tessa’s voice was chilling “You never did, so why pretend now?”
Ethan looked into her eyes but saw none of the warmth that used to be there–only indifference. He froze. At some point,
something between them had changed.
Just then, Ethan’s phone rang. When he pulled it out, Tessa caught a glimpse of Charlotte’s name and let out a bitter laugh. She shook his hand off with force and left promptly.
Ethan frowned at her retreating figure but eventually answered the call.
“Ethan? Where are you?” Charlotte’s voice was shaky with tears. “Can you come to the hospital? My eyes hurt so much… I can’t
see anything… I’m really scared…”
“Don’t be scared,” Ethan said. “I’m on my way.”
He drove off, and in the distance, he spotted Tessa walking along the side of the road.
Suddenly, a car pulled up beside her. She exchanged a few words with the person inside, then got in.
Ethan’s brows furrowed deeply, and his lips were pressed into a hard line. He was just about to follow them when his phone rang
again.
“Mr. Ziegler, you’d better come quickly. Ms. Simmons is causing a scene…”
Ethan inhaled sharply. “I’ll be right there.”
“Are you here to visit Mr. Ziegler Senior?” Zachary asked as he drove.
“Yeah.” Tessa nodded. “What about you? What are you doing around here?”
This was a high–end neighborhood with rows of luxury villas. Ordinary people wouldn’t just wander in.
“Visiting a friend,” Zachary replied. His profile looked sharp under the dim light of the car.
Tessa noticed that he didn’t seem to be in a good mood, so she wisely kept quiet.
“Where to now?” Zachary then asked.
Tessa gave him Rosalle’s address.

“You and Ethan are living separately?” he asked in surprise. He knew that address because he had dropped Tessa off at Rosalie’s
apartment before. It was a standard residential area, which was definitely not where Ethan would live.
“Yes,” Tessa replied after a moment’s thought. “We’re getting divorced soon.”
Zachary looked taken aback.
“He doesn’t love me,” she explained with a bitter look in her eyes. “His heart belongs to someone else. I don’t want to stand in their way anymore.”
Zachary’s gaze darkened. “He doesn’t deserve you. It’s better this way. You deserve so much more.”
Tessa gave a faint, weary smile and shook her head. Once the divorce was finalized, she wouldn’t think about any of this again. At that moment, all she wanted was to fix her eyes.
When the car pulled up to the front of the complex, Zachary suddenly turned to her and said seriously, “Tess, don’t worry. Your eyes will get better. I’ll help you find new corneas.”
Tessa looked at him in astonishment.
“You helped me once. Consider this as me repaying the favor. Be optimistic, alright? If you ever need anything, just call me.”
With a gentle smile, Zachary reached over and ruffled her hair. “Alright. Go on in.”
Tessa stepped out of the car in a daze, her eyes trailing after Zachary’s vehicle as it drove off. Only when he was gone did she snap out of it. She touched her hair before walking into the complex.
Just as she got home, she received a call from David.
“Tess, it’s me.”
“Yes, David? Is something the matter?”
