Chapter 17
Charlotte quickly corrected herself when she realized how inappropriate she sounded. She said, “Sorry, Ethan I–I shouldn’t take up your time. You must be really busy. I’m just… scared being here alone. It’s fine, though. Go ahead and do what you need to. I’ll be okay by myself.”
Seeing how obedient and understanding she was, Ethan reassured her, “The caretaker will be here with you. You’ll be fine. If
anything happens, just call me.”
“Okay, I will.” Charlotte nodded, smiling
As Ethan exited the ward, he suddenly recalled running into Zachary there the other day. He knew that Zachary wouldn’t have shown up for no reason, so he figured that he must’ve been there to see Tessa.
That would mean that Tessa had been hospitalized.
Ethan turned around and went to check the hospital’s admission records, which took him little effort to access. As he had expected, he found Tessa’s record. She had been discharged earlier that morning.
After leaving the hospital, Ethan drove straight to the villa. As he strode through the door, Jaxon quickly came to greet him. “Welcome back, Mr. Ziegler.”
“Is she back?” Ethan asked while walking inside.
“Who?” Jaxon looked puzzled at first but then realized who he meant. “Mrs. Ziegler hasn’t returned.”
Ethan froze mid–step. She hadn’t come back? Could she be with Zachary?
A cold laugh escaped his lips as he dialed Tessa’s number.
Tessa had just arrived at Rosalie’s place. While the latter went to get her some water, her phone rang. When she saw that Ethan was calling, she declined the call without thinking. Then, remembering something, she sent him a text that read, “Please sign the divorce papers as soon as possible.”
Rosalie handed her the glass of water. “What’s wrong? Don’t tell me that scumbag’s calling you again?”
“Yeah.” Tessa took the glass, took a sip, and then took her medication.
Rosalie cursed, “Where was all this concern before? That two–faced bastard. You had better not go soft on him again. You have to cut him off completely this time.”
“Don’t worry. I won’t,” Tessa said quietly.
To show mercy to someone who didn’t care about her was nothing short of self–torture.
Rosalie glanced at the time and realized she was running late for work.
“Get some rest. I’ll order takeout for
you.

“No need. I don’t feel like eating. Just go. You’ll be late,” Tessa said, shaking her head. She knew how busy doctors were and didn’t want to trouble Rosalie more than necessary.
Rosalie gave her a few more reminders before hurrying off.
Tessa slept until around four in the afternoon. When she first opened her eyes, a sharp pain struck her head, and her vision was blurry. It took a while before things came back into focus.
During the past two days, she’d truly experienced the fear and torment of losing her sight. This made her even more determined to do everything she could to heal her eyes.
Several days passed without a single word from Tessa. She wouldn’t answer Ethan’s calls or reply to his messages. Unless it was about the divorce, she didn’t want to talk to him at all
For the first time, Ethan felt truly agitated. He wondered what game Tessa was playing now.
Meanwhile, a friend of David’s dropped off an invitation to a birthday party. David gave Ethan a call and said, “I haven’t been feeling well lately, so I won’t be attending. You and Tessa can go in my place.”
Ethan’s brows furrowed tightly. “We’ll see.”
David immediately picked up on something. “You brat. Did you two fight again?”
Ethan fell silent. That was answer enough.
