Chapter 16
Zachary opened the bag and said gently, “I brought you some food. I wasn’t sure what you liked, so I just grabbed a few things. Do. you want to have some?”
Tessa shook her head. “I don’t have an appetite right now.”
“You still need to eat something” Zachary frowned slightly, clearly worried.
Rosalie piped up thoughtfully, “Let me feed her.”
Zachary nodded and gave her room.
He had bought light and mild food. Tessa only managed a few bites before her strength gave out. She said she was tired and wanted to rest. So, Rosalie and Zachary had no choice but to step out.
“Ms. Gray, you’re Tessa’s doctor, right?” As soon as they were outside, Zachary turned to Rosalie and spoke solemnly, “Since you’re in charge of her case, how could something like this happen?”
His questioning tone made Rosalie feel deeply guilty. She replied, “This was my fault. Right before the surgery, someone deliberately distracted me. I didn’t see it coming either.”
She truly felt she had let Tessa down. However, it was all Ethan’s doing. He was truly despicable..
“The corneas are gone now,” Zachary said flatly. He was angry with Rosalie, but he knew the blame didn’t lie with her. The real culprit was Ethan.
“I’ll reach out through my connections and keep an eye out for suitable corneas. In the meantime, please keep looking after Tessa. Talk with her when you can and keep her company,” he added.
Zachary’s concern for Tessa surprised Rosalie.
“If you don’t mind me asking, how long have you known Tess? I’ve never heard of you before.”
She and Tessa were practically inseparable. She knew everything about her, except this man. She had never even heard Tessa mention his name.
Zachary answered, “We’ve known each other for a long time but lost touch for a while. Of course you wouldn’t know about me. Just a heads–up, Ethan’s looking for her. Please protect her. Don’t let him hurt her again.”
Rosalie’s expression turned serious. “Don’t worry, I’ll keep Tess safe!”
Two days later, Tessa’s vision finally returned. In just those two short days, she’d lost noticeable weight. Rosalie could see the changes clearly, and it broke her heart.
“I’ll take you with me. You can rest at my place,” Rosalie said, wrapping an arm around her shoulders as they walked. “I’ve asked around everywhere about the corneas. I’m sure we’ll get good news soon.”

Tessa smiled. “Thanks, Rosie.”
“You don’t have to thank me.”
As they walked past a ward, they caught a glimpse inside. Ethan was gently feeding Charlotte. Her eyes were covered in bandages, a sign that the surgery must’ve gone well.
Upon witnessing that scene, Tessa thought she’d feel angry, upset, or devastated. But instead, her emotions were calm and steady.
At that moment, she knew that she was completely done with Ethan. She’d let him go.
Rosalie, on the other hand, was seething. Just as she was about to charge in and give the couple a piece of her mind, Tessa stopped
her.
“Let’s just go,” she said.
Rosalie bit her lip and led Tessa away quickly.
Just then, Ethan glanced toward the door as if sensing something
Charlotte noticed his pause and asked, “Ethan, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” Ethan said quietly. He placed the bowl in her hands and said, “I just remembered something I need to take care of. Eat up. I’ll send a nurse to check in on you later.
“You’re leaving already?” Charlotte sounded anxious. “Can’t you stay a little longer?”
