Chapter 6
Fatigue washed over Tessa like a tidal wave. She was growing tired of this nonsense. She didn’t see the point of fighting anymore when she was never part of this so-called “love triangle”.
“I don’t mind,” Tessa said coldly. Why would she mind when she was already used to this? “You two have fun. I’ll leave. That way, I won’t spoil it for you.”
With that, she turned and walked away.
Over the years, whenever David tried to set up a private moment for her and Ethan, the latter would always be sure to include Charlotte. The result was always the same. Tessa would snap after Charlotte’s subtle provocations and end up parting with Ethan on bad terms.
This time, Tessa didn’t want to cause a scene, so she stepped aside and gave them a chance to be alone.
She’d barely taken a step when Ethan grabbed her by the wrist. She frowned at the pain shooting up her arm and turned back to look at him.
Ethan snapped impatiently, “Tessa, I did as Grandpa said and brought you here to have fun, so why are you being unreasonable again?”
“I’m not being unreasonable,” Tessa replied. She was speechless yet amused. “You specifically invited Charlotte here. Why am I wrong for voluntarily stepping aside to give you two space?”
Charlotte quickly tried to explain, “Ms. Langford, you misunderstood. Nothing is going on between Ethan and me. He just feels bad for me because I might end up blind. Ethan, maybe I should leave. I don’t want you and Ms. Langford to fight because of me.”
“Leave?” Ethan gripped Charlotte’s arm tightly, pulled her behind him protectively, and then turned to Tessa. “I know what you’re trying to do, Tessa. You stayed out recently just to get my attention.
“Grandpa told me to take you out on a date, and now you want to leave halfway through? You’re just trying to use Grandpa to put pressure on Charlotte. You’re still playing games, Tessa!”
His twisted logic left Tessa dumbstruck. She would be the villain whether she stayed at the amusement park or not.
In the past, she would have argued with him and maybe even yelled at him. But that day, she was tired. She didn’t want to argue or fight. She decided to let him think whatever he wanted. “Fine. I’m playing games. If you’re not happy about it, then let’s just get a divorce!”
Charlotte’s eyes lit up when she heard this, yet she feigned concern. “Ms. Langford, even if you don’t like me, you can’t just throw the word ‘divorce’ around! It’ll hurt Ethan’s feelings.”
“I have no feelings for her!” Ethan practically blurted, eager to clear the air with Charlotte. He immediately regretted his words. But a second later, he turned to Tessa, his expression cold.
Although Tessa had long since given up on Ethan, his words still stung. She stared at the man she had loved for five whole years, and disappointment overwhelmed her.
He had saved her from hell five years ago, only to kick her back cruelly now. The accumulated disappointment over the years made it easier for Tessa to bid goodbye to the sentiments she once thought she’d never let go of.
“Alright, Ethan. Don’t say things out of anger.” Charlotte stepped in, pretending to be the voice of reason. “How about we go on the Ferris wheel? We can talk things through while we’re up there. Come on, Ethan. Just do it for me,” she said sweetly, wrapping her arms around his.
Ethan glanced at Tessa and reluctantly nodded in agreement.
Tessa lowered her gaze, her thick lashes hiding the sadness in her eyes.
Ethan had to know that she couldn’t stand heights and that she’d developed severe PTSD after Adam jumped to his death. She couldn’t get on the Ferris wheel, but Ethan and Charlotte took her silence as agreement.
Charlotte happily looped her arm through Ethan’s and led him toward the ride. Ethan didn’t even bother to look back at Tessa once.
At that moment, Tessa’s disappointment in him reached its peak. However, she did not want to let David down, so she forced herself to swallow her nausea and followed them to the Ferris wheel.
There was a long queue for the ride. After all, the Ferris wheel was a popular ride and a symbol of romance for couples in love.
Unlike roller coasters, pirate ships, or drop towers where people screamed and lost their composure, the Ferris wheel offered couples a private carriage where they could sit together and admire the gorgeous scenery, all while looking composed. It was the epitome of romance.
Charlotte stayed attached to Ethan, chatting and laughing with him the entire time they were in line. They looked like a young couple deeply in love, and their good looks drew much attention. Many whispered around them and praised them for being a match made in heaven.
Charlotte couldn’t have been prouder.
Meanwhile, Tessa was made to look like a third wheel even though she was Ethan’s rightful wife.
The Ferris wheel slowly rotated, and the attendants let people onto the emptied carriages after each rotation. Charlotte kept holding onto Ethan, so the staff naturally ushered them into one of the carriages.
Tessa didn’t plan to get on, so she turned to leave once Ethan and Charlotte boarded.
But then, the Ferris wheel let out a loud creaking sound. The carriage at the very top started swaying violently from side to side.
The customers waiting below screamed in fear, and the staff immediately panicked. They quickly stopped the ride and contacted the rescue personnel.
Charlotte, who had just sat down in the carriage, was about to seize her chance to get close to Ethan when the Ferris wheel suddenly stopped. The attendant approached them, informing them that there was a problem with the mechanism and the ride had to be temporarily halted.
The blood drained from Charlotte’s face, and she immediately grabbed Ethan’s hand. “Ethan, we—”
Before she could finish, Ethan shot to his feet and clutched the attendant’s arm. “Where’s the young woman who came with us? Which carriage was she in? Has she gotten off yet?”
The attendant was stunned by Ethan’s bombardment of questions. Last he checked, he hadn’t seen another person with Ethan and Charlotte, so he didn’t know which young woman Ethan was talking about.
Before the attendant could ask further, Charlotte pointed toward the crowd below. “I see Ms. Langford! She’s already gotten off. We should hurry and get off, too.”
Ethan glanced at the crowd, but he couldn’t spot Tessa.
Frowning, he stepped out of the carriage, intending to search for her. But as soon as he stepped out, Charlotte let out a low cry of pain and grabbed his wrist.
“My eyes, Ethan! My eyes hurt so much! I can’t see, Ethan. I’m scared…”
