Chapter 16
Last night, Caden heard the ruckus and couldn’t believe Alex had lost it like that.
When the call abruptly ended, Caden tried calling back, but Harper’s phone was already off.
He was up all night, worried sick about Harper, and rushed to the Lavien Group first thing in the morning.
Right now, Caden’s sharp eyes were sizing up Harper.
She looked a bit pale, but seemed to be in good spirits.
Caden felt a wave of relief and his playful side kicked in. “So, Alex didn’t do anything crazy to you, did he?”
His tone was lazy, and he gave her a look that seemed to be searching for something.
Harper quickly caught on to what he meant.
The wild scene from last night was still fresh in her mind, and her cheeks turned red with embarrassment and anger.
Caden was a man, and Alex had called him at such a moment. Didn’t he think about how Caden would feel? It was almost like making love in public.
“Nothing.”
Her tone was calm, and her expression was composed.
Such private matters couldn’t be shared with an outsider.
She knew where to draw the line.
Caden smiled and let out a barely noticeable sigh of relief. “As long as he didn’t get violent with you, that’s enough.”
“He wouldn’t! He’s not that rough, Harper quickly replied.
Caden just quietly studied her. “Are you defending him?”
Even though Alex had hurt her in so many ways, she still instinctively defended him.
How much did she love that Alex?
Caden couldn’t figure it out.
Harper frowned. “I’m not defending anyone; I’m just telling the truth.”
“By the way, you didn’t come here early in the morning just to dig into my private life, right?” She didn’t want to keep talking about this.
Whatever happened between her and Alex was their business and had nothing to do with the guy in front of her.
“Of course not. I’m a businessman, and I’m all about profit.” Caden pushell a document across the table towards her.
Harper picked up the document, which turned out to be an amusement park proposal.
The proposal was detailed, clearly outlining the location, construction, initial planning model, and future development prospects of the amusement park.
Harper focused, reading it carefully page by page.
Her serious demeanor was so captivating that it was hard to look away, especially her emerald green eyes, which could draw anyone in.
For a moment, Caden was lost in watching her.
He thought to himself, “That idiot Alex, Harper is such an amazing woman, and he still wants a divorce. Is he out of his mind or something?‘
After a while, Harper carefully said, “I think this project is feasible, but if we’re going to invest, I’d like to do an on–site inspection.”
Having been in project investment for so long, Harper wouldn’t easily agree just because of a proposal.
Every project had to be guaranteed profitable to be viable.
Chapter 16
Not to mention, as the main project manager of the Lavien Group, she had handled hundreds of projects over the past six years, and almost every project had been a guaranteed success. For this reason alone, everyone in the company held her in high regard.
Caden crossed his legs and raised an eyebrow with a smile. “I didn’t say I wanted you to invest. This is a gift for you.”
Harper was taken aback, staring straight at him. “Why?”
He spread his hands, a mischievous smile on his face.
“Of course, it’s to win over Ms. Orsini. Just a little perk, hoping Ms. Orsini will look out for FusionX in the future.”
FusionX was a company Caden’s grandfather had started, and it was pretty famous in the country.
Harper, however, pushed the proposal back, her tone steady. “Mr. Elikin, I can’t accept it. Cooperation has to be mutually beneficial.”
Caden wasn’t mad, snapping his fingers with that same playful vibe. “Alright! Then let’s go for mutual benefit now.”
With that, Caden stood up and gave a slight bow, making a gesture for her to follow.
Harper ignored his theatrics, stood up, and walked out with him.
They drove straight to the amusement park construction site.
As they got out of the car, Harper’s phone beeped.
She opened it to see a message from Alex: [When you get back, explain Emily’s situation to me.]
Harper sneered inwardly, glanced at it, and put her phone away.
She didn’t want to reply to him, nor did she need to. Besides, it was work time now, and she didn’t want to be distracted by personal stuff.
Just as they were about to enter the site, a middle–aged man walked out.
The guy had a potbelly and wore a white safety helmet askew on his head, strutting over. “Hey, what are you doing here? This is a construction site, not a place you can just walk into.”
Before Harper could speak, Caden stepped forward, his smile tinged with coldness. “Who do you think we are?”
Harper instantly stopped Caden from revealing their identities. She smiled faintly and explained, “We’re inspectors sent by the company to check on the construction progress.”
So they were just inspectors, not some big shots.
The middle–aged man snorted arrogantly. “It’s unnecessary. Everything is done strictly by the book, no violations at all.”
His gaze brazenly fell on Harper.
She looked to be in her twenties, quite pretty, and seemed like a naive girl who knew nothing.
What could they understand? He could just make up some nonsense and Send them away.
Harper’s beautiful eyes were sharp.
She glanced at her watch. “It’s already 9:30, why hasn’t work started yet?”
This middle–aged man was the main person in charge of the site, Zack Smith.
Zack, cunning as always, chuckled and reported, “You didn’t know, it rained yesterday, the site is slippery, and we can’t start work. A safety accident would be a big deal.
As he spoke, he pointed to a banner hanging upstairs. “Look, safety above all.”
It seemed like a good reason.
Harper’s lips curled into a cold smile. ‘It rained yesterday, today, and tomorrow. According to you, if it rains all month, will you stop working all month?” Zack’s smile froze, and he was momentarily speechless.
Chapter 16
He didn’t expect this seemingly weak and gentle girl to have such a strong temper.
‘Or should I call God to stop the rain and let it resume after the construction is completed?” Her tone grew colder. Though it was a joke, it sent a shiver down one’s spine.
Zack felt something was wrong. This inspector was too intimidating!
He chuckled nervously and said cautiously, “No need, I’ll notify them to start work right away.”
Harper glanced at the name tag on his clothes and said sternly, “Wait, I’ll find someone to notify them. Mr. Smith, you can contact the HR department to complete your departure procedures.”
Zack was stunned. What did she mean? Did she just fire him?
