Chapter 17
Realizing he no longer held importance in Adele’s life left Byron deeply unsettled until they’d returned to their accommodation
Lying in beil, he couldn’t stop thinking about their chance encounter with Adele earlier that evening. She seemed completely transformed from the
woman he’d known.
Though he hated to admit it, Adele had blossomed. She was undeniably better than when she’d been with him.
Remembering how he’d borrowed a stranger’s phone to call her at least a dozen times without success only added to his frustration.
Adele. Her name echoed in Byron’s mind throughout the night.
Even while with Scarlett, he always think about the man by her side.
Scarlett, too, was fixated on Adele’s companion–a man whose natural sophistication marked him as someone exceptional Compared to Byron, this stranger somehow seemed to win.
Why should the woman she’d bested now have someone better than the man scarlett had won? It wasn’t fair!
Both were so preoccupied thinking about other people that neither noticed how distracted and perfunctory they were with each other.
Meanwhile, the atmosphere between Adele and Ethan was filled with ambiance. Adele felt somewhat shy, but Ethan refused to let her retreat into her shell, gently hugging her.
Back at her rental cottage, Adele suddenly realized something: she had never told Ethan about her divorce. How did he know?
Believing in direct communication rather than silent speculation, Adele immediately called him.
“Hey, my girl. Everything okay?” Ethan answered, clearly delighted by her call
“I never told you I was divorced. How did you know that?” Adele asked straightforwardly.
Ethan felt a flash of nervousness, having thought he’d gotten away with this slip–up. “Hold tight–I’m coming over,” he said.
While waiting, Adele tidied up her place a bit.She didn’t have to wait long before hearing a knock at her door.
After letting Ethan in, she stood waiting for his explanation.
“I’m sorry, Adele. That first day when I saw you here alone, I was concerned about you. I asked my assistant to find out,he mentioned you’d gotten divorced,” he confessed.
“Please forgive me?“.
“I’m not upset with you,” Adele said, charmed by his awkward attempt. “I just suddenly realized you knew about my divorce, and I was thinking, you must know I just got out of a marriage, and you still…”
“I know you just got divorced. Yes, I’m taking advantage of your vulnerability, but I’m crazy about you, baby.” Ethan interrupted, not wanting to hear her diminish herself. To him, she was perfect just as she was.
“I’m clueless when it comes to love.I might not have been the first to catch your attention, but you’re the only one I want to love. You’re the only in my
life.”
Once again, Adele was stunned by the intensity of Ethan’s feelings for her.
It would be difficult for anyone to remain unmoved in the face of such sincere emotion. So instead of questioning his earlier investigation into her life, she simply embraced him gently.
