Still, he didn’t stop.
Caleb threw himself at me, his arms wrapping so tightly around my waist that it hurt.
“Is this a dream?” he whispered. “Mom came to see me in my dreams…”
I exhaled slowly, suppressing the urge to pry him off.
Then he murmured something else.
“Dreams are better. In dreams, Mom belongs only to me.”

I tried to push him away. He wouldn’t budge.

William quickly cut in. “He hasn’t been sleeping well. He barely gets any rest, but now, with you here, he’ll—”
Before he could finish, Caleb’s breathing slowed.
And, just like that, in under thirty minutes, he fell into the first deep sleep he’d had in weeks.
It was only then that I noticed the scars pecking out from under his collar.
My gaze flicked to William.
He ran a hand through his hair, voice tight with anger. “Luna did that. That bitch–she was abusing him while I wasn’t looking.”
He was watching me carefully, waiting for me to react.

Luna hated me.
Of course she wouldn’t treat my child kindly after getting rid of me.

I left him standing there as I walked away.
