Chapter 8

By the time I heard the news that Ryan had secretly sent people to break Quentin’s arm, I was already deeply absorbed in a new project. Upon hearing it, I merely remarked that he had it coming and went right back to work.
Displeased by my indifference, Ryan maintained a fair and impartial image at work, but at home, his punishments grew
increasingly intense.
One day, Quentin borrowed a friend’s phone to call me. His voice carried a rare hint of defeat.
“Natalie, I give up. You’re back at Pickett Corporation now, aren’t you? I don’t know what’s gotten into Ryan, but he’s been ruthlessly taking over Lawson Corporation’s resources. The company is struggling.
“If you come back and help me, we’ll get married right away. Forget that one–year agreement, okay?”
What a joke.
I was starting to think Ryan hadn’t just broken his arm. Maybe he had shattered his brain, too. Otherwise, how could he still not
understand simple words?
“Quentin, if you’re sick, go see a doctor! We broke up ages ago! What one–year agreement?! Are you dreaming?!”
On the other end, Quentin spoke in an earnest tone, “Natalie, stop messing around. This time, I truly want to marry you. Olivia has almost fully recovered her memory. I’ve already sent her back to the hospital. Soon, she’ll be back to normal, and no one will
be able to interfere with us anymore. Come back, okay?”
Just then, Ryan emerged from the bathroom, shirtless. He leaned in, gave me a kiss, then frowned at my phone and muttered in dissatisfaction, “Is it someone from work again? Is it Zach or Shaun? Talking about work after hours–I’m firing them.”
Quentin heard his voice and immediately exploded, “There’s a man?! Natalie, are you cheating on me?! Who the hell is this
bastard?!”
My liver ached from anger. Just as I was about to hang up, Ryan snatched the phone from me, his eyes dark with amusement.
“Quentin?”
